Decent updated Canon camera here
I recently purchased this Canon SX-520 HS digital camera to replace an older Nikon digital camera. I had an 2 older Canon SX-510 HS digital cameras last year & got a lot of good photos with those 2 digital cameras before they crapped out. Since this is a modestly upgraded/updated digital camera over the SX-510 HS & uses the same batteries, I figured that I would give this camera a try since the older & problematic Nikon digital camera I replaced & sold with this camera had the same size 42X optical zoom lens. Good points so far is: pretty easy to use, takes pretty good outdoor photos, menu is fairly simply to navigate, takes the same batteries the prior SX-510 HS took and has a nice 42X optical zoom lens....up from 30X with the older Canon SX-510 HS camera. Megapixels also increased a bit with this newer Canon camera also. Bad areas so far: flash slow to reload after taking each photo at night or low-light situations, questionable photo quality indoors or in low-light situations. This camera uses the easy to find SD cards for photo storage and overall, this Canon camera is a decent upgrade from the prior model from Canon. It's also slightly larger and the video control on the backside was moved slightly closer to the side....reducing the chances of me making a video my mistake [a big problem I had with the SX-510 HS Canon camera]. There is no optical viewfinder on this camera....only a decent-sized rear fixed LCD screen as a viewfinder.....which is fine for me. I know many like the swiveling/tilting rear LCD monitor for taking self photos or other photos...but for my purposes, the fixed into the camera rear LCD viewfinder works just fine. If I want self photos of me, I have a larger Canon digital camera that has the rear LCD screen that flips and swivels out. This digital camera does have a variety of manual settings possible as well. This camera is my "everyday" camera for scenic outdoor and other photos. I gave this camera 5 of 5 stars already because in the few days I have played around with this digital camera, it seems to work flawlessly and quick. Video quality is pretty decent for this camera also. It won't take DSLR quality photos, but if you need a decent super zoom digital camera without the hassles of changing lens, this camera should do the job fairly well. I may do an update to my review as time rolls one.

Canon quality at a great price
Another great Canon camera and another great Amazon purchase. I saved $200 from the Target store price on this camera! Very straight forward user friendly camera. I also have a Canon Rebel and wanted this camera for everyday use at work. It is easy even for novice photographers. Nice user interface menu. Easy controls. Pick it up, point and shoot, really as simple as that. If you want to get into the manual features this camera affords you that capability as well. Auto focus is quick and sharp, even in low light conditions. Flash is not a pop-up, user has to pop it up, but for the price point a very minor "inconvenience". Date/Time stamp capability along with auto sequential file numbering is convenient. I am a police officer and will be using it to take field interview photographs so this feature is a necessity for this purpose. Nice to have a Canon rechargeable battery so as not to have to mess around with AA batteries being devoured by the camera. A fully charged battery gives you the ability to shoot for an extended period of time without having to worry about your camera taking a power dump. Another feature I like on this camera for my use is the "auto framing" button on the side of the lens housing. This button will activate auto framing of your subject from head to toe. Camera performs well in low light. Another great Amazon purchase.

Nice camera
Love the camera. I think this is the nicest one we've bought yet. I took pictures with the optical zoom fully extended and even with my shaky hands the pictures came out perfect. Audio and video were nice as well. Shoots pretty quickly and I've had zero problems so far. I wouldn't say its a super solid camera. Meaning if you're going to be climbing mountains and dropping it a lot you might want to find something more rugged. We took it riding ATVs in Maui over pretty rugged terrain but it was around my neck so no problem (jostled around a lot but not banging against anything hard). In the dash compartment without a case I am not so sure how long it would last. Its seems well built but probably not for people who would be beating it around a lot. For you outdoorsy people, get a GoPro.

Didn't Think I Bought Used...
I purchased this camera for my daughter because it's the same as she uses in her photography class, and I'm positive that I ordered, and paid for, a new camera; however, based on the packaging - some bubble wrap and not a manufacturer box, I believe that I received a return or used camera. I appreciated the battery charger for it; however, ours was missing the neck strap - problematic when the user is a middle school child, and I have to worry about it being dropped. We ended up checking a bunch of stores trying to find a neck strap for it (seems no one carries them), and surprise, had to order a strap from Amazon. My daughter hasn't complained about anything not working on the camera, so it seems that all is well - I just don't appreciate receiving a not- new product missing a vital piece when I pay for a new product and all the pieces. Due to time constraints, I did not return.

Easy to use
After using this camera for a couple of months I am perfectly pleased with its features and performance. I'm a novice when it comes to using a camera so the cameras need to be user friendly. It doesn't come with a manual, but you can access the manual online. I haven't printed it out because it is several pages but I do plan on printing the most important parts for a reference. I like the zoom feature and am able to take up close photos from inside my house of wildlife in our yard. A sturdy tripod is a must for close up photos. The quality of the photos are excellent.

This is an amazing camera for beginners or non professional photographers. Easy to use, good video and picture quality, and mostly, it has 168x zoom! It is advertised as 42x zoom but on the screen, it shows 168x zoom.

I bought this camera for my daughter's trip to East Africa, where I knew she would need a reliable compact camera with a great zoom, but I didn't have the budget for a new one. This was the perfect solution. It took some superb pictures in the game parks, but was quicker lighter and easier to use than bigger full SLR cameras with large lenses. My daughter was delighted with this absolute bargain!
