Great little device, gives me perfect 5.1 sound on Windows 10, Linux Mint and Raspberry Pi OS
Cubilux USB A to TOSLINK Optical Audio Adapter is a great little device, it gives me perfect 5.1 sound on Windows 10, Linux Mint and Raspberry Pi OS.I bought this to replace an old Soundblaster XFi card with optical output which connects a PC to my home theatre 5.1 surround sound system. The latest versions of Windows/Linux don't recognise the Soundblaster sound card, and this USB device was a simple solution which enabled me to upgrade the OS on the PC. It also opens the door to replacing the PC with a N100 mini and still connect with 5.1 sound.The device was recognised out of the box by Windows, Linux Mint and Raspberry Pi OS, but the key to getting it working was VLC media player with its multitude of settings, to enable the 5.1 signal to be passed through to the amp without any processing.Perhaps these details will help others:WINDOWSSettings / Sound / Output Device = S/PDIF Interface (USB Interface Adapter)VLC:- Force S/PDIF support = checked (also works unchecked)- Force detection of Dolby Surround = Auto- Output module = Auto- HDMI / S/PDIF audio passthrough = Enabled- Device = S/PDIF Interface (USB SPDIF Adapter)LINUX MINTSettings / Sound / Device = Digital Output (S/PDIF) USB AdapterProfile = Digital Stereo (IEC 958) OutputVLC:- Force S/SDIF Support = checked- Force detection = Auto- Output module = ALSA- Use S/PDIF when available = checked- Device = USB S/PDIF Adapter USB Audio Direct hardware device without any conversion- (or Device = USB Audio IEC958 S/PDIF Digital Audio Output)RASPBERRY PI OSAs above for Linux Mint, just select the USB device from the list with passthrough / no processingI've tested it on Windows/Linux Mint/Raspberry Pi OS with encoded 5.1 content (movies, TV, etc). I downloaded some samples which test all the speakers in turn to check it's all working, I'd forgotten how brilliant some of the demos are with sounds coming at you from all directions. I expect it won't work with PC game sound effects unless your PC can encode them into a 5.1 stream in real-time, but that's not my use case anyhow. It outputs stereo sound just fine too, I use Dolby Prologic on the amp to copy stereo sound to the rears in that scenario.While experimenting I couldn't get it working on Linux Ubuntu as the device list in VLC was empty, but I prefer Mint anyhow so that wasn't a problem for me. Time will tell whether it's reliable but so far it works great for my particular needs.

Great for music but doesn't work with the Apple TV app
I bought this as a way to get lossless audio from my iPad, iPhone and windows laptop to my HiFi and this works almost flawlessly. When steaming music the quality is amazing, no issues at all and audibly better quality than Bluetooth. YouTube and Netflix also work great, but when streaming video using the Apple TV app no audio comes through (using Windows and iPad apps). Luckily this isn't a dealbreaker for me (and also is likely Apple's fault rather than the manufacturer, since it works with other streaming services, hence I haven't docked any stars) but I would look for another product if playing back Apple TV content from a laptop or iPad will be important for you.

Works well with PC, not with consoles
I'm using with my laptop no problem and it seems to do a good job of transferring my audio to my soundbar. The device appears in Windows as an SPDIF device.As the title suggests and the supplier says in their comments, this does not work with PS5. I've not actually tried it with XBox Series X, but only wanted to use it for my PS5. It was stated by a customer that this does work with PS5, contary to what the description says, so my fault. I didn't want to lose video quality by using one of the HDMI audio extractors and wanted optical for my soundbar. My monitor doesn't have speakers, so this would have been ideal.

Dead on arrival
Quality control must be suspect as the device was dead on arrival. Bought it to connect an Nvidia Shield streamer to a Stereo Yamaha R-N602 amplifier. The Nvidia detected it as the default audio output despite but I could not get any audio. The red LED transmitter was however working. I also tried using it with my laptop, selected it as the default audio output, tried different but-rates but again no sound. Cubilux customer service, however, was good.Ordered a Nobsound Douk Audio U2 which worked first time with no fuss whatsoever. Unfortunately, it is an expensive overkill for my application but it works.

Works very well with PC or Laptop and Windows 11
It works very well, audio is crisp and clear without any issues. Its a shame PCs or Laptops don't have a dedicated optical output, while consoles and devices are replacing it with "USB" this is silly since the optical connection has the better latency and compatibility overall.Anyhow this product works well and is slim plug and play, the only negative is there is a 1-2 second delay in audio play back at times. It would not stop me from purchasing it again though.

Cubilux = Perfection 😍
I have been a fan of Cubilux products since 2022 when I first tested their USB A 192KHz DAC in Atlanta!Fast forward to 2024 and we regularly exchange emails and I always share my thoughts on their new tech.This USB A to Coaxial/SPIDF adapter is nothing short of perfect. Like everything else they create it is easy to install and needs zero setup.The size is perfectly small and connects my Surface Pro to my nearfield monitors. I am creating music with their products and releasing it to streaming services.The quality of their little gadgets are worth way more than the selling price. I guarantee you wont be disappointed with anything you buy from Cubilux.If you want some wired earphones with an insanely good microphone, check out their USB C Hi Res Earphones, and their USB C to 3.5mm 192KHz DAC for your earphones and headphones.Their gadgets have blown my mind! 100% recommended! 🔊

Not great on an iPad Pro.
Bought to use on an iPad Pro in order to connect it to active speakers with an optical input. Seems to work if I use the Qobuz app or Foobar2000. Weirdly, music played via the Apple Music app fades in and out intermittently. This happened with both CD and hi res music. Same thing happened with the BBC Sounds app. Not sure if it is a power issue. Have since bought a Douk Audio U2 USB-optical converter which is twice as expensive but has been working perfectly for over a year now.
