Can't be beat
I backed this project when in was on Kickstarter because I'm a music photographer and a lover of drumming, and I always find it frustrating that the drummers are hidden in the dark at the back of the stage, and generally blocked by the frontman. The book was a long time coming from when the fundraiser finished. Apparently it grew as more and more drummers got involved into this impressive volume. This is primarily a photobook, the author being a photographer, and the quality of the photos is astounding, as is the layout. Anyone who has tried to photograph a drummer will attest to this. The fact that those featured are some of the best and most well-known drummers in the world makes it a must-have for drummers and fans of percussion. There will, no doubt, be dissenting voices that bemoan the absence of this or that drummer, but the fact that the famously cantankerous Ginger Baker is included must be a testament to the author's photographic and diplomatic skills. The accompanying text, although brief, gives an insight into the oft maligned people behind the kits and is not intended to serve as a drumming manual. As such, it should be viewed for what it is; an impressive beautifully presented visual record dedicated to vital driving forces behind your favourite music.

A Great Read
THE DRUM THING – DEIDRE O’ CALLAGHANIn this coffee table edition of The Drum Thing writer and photographer Deidre O’ Callaghan takes readers into the personal surroundings of famous drummers. The book features O’Callaghan’s wonderful photography, and includes short interviews whether at the drummer homes or in a studio. Upon research into Deidre’sbackground it seems she spent five years touring around the world capturing her favourite drummers. Over 100 drummers have been photographed including Ringo Starr, Ginger Baker, Dave Grohl, Steve Gadd, Neil Peart, and Lars Ulrich, just to name a few. From Deidre’s site “Each is photographed in their private rehearsal space – from studios, bedrooms and basements to garages and gardens. This access allowed me to observe their everyday environments, experience their styles of playing up close and capture as best as I could, the true essence of these artists’ personalities and lifestyles.”I found this to be a very entertaining and addictive read due to the fact of the very personal conversations Deidre had with them ( very casual ) which makes a change from some of the long winded interviews you read This edition deserves a place in every serious drummer’s library! The photography is amazing some wonderful shots of all of the drummers this is truly a lady at the top of her profession showing passion and commitment to her art!

Good, not great.
I was very excited when this arrived, but I have to say it's a bit disappointing. Not enough text, and too many photos of drummers away from their kits. Should have been a lot better.

A beautiful compilation of photos and anecdotes from the world's most successful drummers
It's a great coffee table book that gives you a peek into the lives of the least appreciated musicians. People don't get that it's the drummers who get you dancing. Their groove is what provides a song with its backbone. Seeing my favorite drummers (Brad Wilk, Dave Grohl) in print and learning about their experiences was so mindblowing. The quality of the photos is great too. I love it and I have given it as a gift to my friends (drummers and non-drummers alike) - they love it too!

This is the best book I've ever read on the subject
I've been beating my brains out on drums for over sixty years. This is the best book I've ever read on the subject. I've known many of the feelings about drums and drumming for years but I'd never verbalized them. It was very good to see other drummers have the same thoughts. If you play, get this book.If you're thinking about laying down some filthy lucre for a set, read this book first to see if your mind is maladjusted enough to want to beat on things for a living.Old drummers never die, they just beat it out of town.

What a great collection of participants from virtually every era and every genre of music. Add superb photography to the equation and you have an outstanding book suitable for any coffee table. As a student of drumming myself, I learned a lot from each interview and am very mindful of such lessons when playing. All told, a high quality piece both visually and in content.

Great gift for a drummer and it was very well received! Super creative, great photos, and full of interesting writeups that non-drummers find interesting. I appreciated this shipper because it was cheaper than other listings, and the book was delivered before it's longest duration in the range, which was well before Christmas.
