I don't know why I was shocked to find these mother-of-pearl-style acrylic knife handle blanks while browsing Amazon. I do know that you really can find almost anything on Amazon. It was just that it had only been a few days since my brother told me to keep an eye out for something special for the knife he was making for me. I really didn't think finding something special would be quite this easy!When the product came, I thought it was lovely, a nicely marbled, shimmery mother-of-pearl-looking material that in my mind would make a beautiful knife handle. I hoped my brother would think so too.I was gratified that he was pleased with the material. He had planned a slightly wider handle but said his plan could easily be modified to fit the size of the material I supplied. As he is a perfectionist, I wasn't totally certain he would be completely satisfied but he really appeared to be happy. He isn't a great actor so I don't think he was faking being pleased just to be nice. If this guy is willing to accept a piece of material his sister blundered into on Amazon...well, the stuff isn't half bad! That isn't faint praise. As I said, the man is a perfectionist.I'm looking forward to that knife. I know it will be a stunner.Look into this material if you do similar crafting. You may be surprised at the quality for the price.

These are thinner than what I thought they would be. It doesn’t allow much for a mistake. It is easy to work with. I’m a beginner and as far as carving and smoothing it was easy enough, but I messed up and because it’s thinner than I thought it would be, there was no way to correct my mistakes without making the handle too thin. But most of that was my fault because I’m just learning how to make knife handles and so for someone who’s good at it it would probably be the perfect thickness.

The blanks came well packaged with a clear plastic film covering the surfaces to prevent scratching.The first thing I noticed, even before opening the package, was the weight. They have a pretty decent heft for the size and feel quite substantial.Once I peeled off the plastic, I was quite impressed with the shine and depth of the pattern in the resin. It is a quite convincing imitation of pearl. It reminds me a little of a material used for years in pistol grips, called “Pearlite“ which is some sort of laminate I think. I don’t know exactly what it was made from but I know it was around before resins became so popular.I am planning to use my laser engraver to put designs on these and I expect from past experience that should work well.All in all, I think this is a great material for a myriad of different types of projects, and could totally see myself buying more of these in the future.

I haven’t gotten to put these on a knife to see how they shape and polish up yet but they seem like they’ll work quite well. They’re generously sized and quite thick and they came with protective film over the nicely polished surfaces of both sides of each which gives a good indication of the variety of color and character you can get from them. I prefer working with natural materials as opposed to resins, micarta, etc but these do a good job of duplicating the multicolor luminescence of pearl so I’m looking forward to trying them out (plus, I won’t have to be quite as careful when peening my pins). Since they also sell for less than a lot of pre-cut scales out there, if these work out, I’ll probably order more. Didn’t see any surface pits, impurities, or imperfections like another reviewer but I’ll update if I run into any issues as I shape them…for now though, this is a five star item as far as I can tell.

Been making knives for years. Wooden, acrylic, some metal handles, and I have yet had a set of acrylic scales melt while sanding or drilling, until now. Suggest you use higher quality materials.

Am working on a handle and this is so nice. Will look very good when done, is easy to work with.
