I have very dark brown hair. In some light in can look close to black, in others it looks like a deep dark chocolate. I have a smattering of grey and began to dye my hair about eight hears ago. I discovered that Iam allergic to PPD (horrible blisters, rash and itching) in dark hair dye so I switched to Madison Reed and have struggled to 1) Find the right color of dark brown. I tried many and even went to one of their color studios. Unhappy with all of their shades. 2) Find a brown that did not turn orange as it faded. No luck. I tried every base type including neutral and every color faded to horrible orange. 3) Find a color that did not fade within the first few weeks. I have to wash daily because I do not like the feeling of unwashed hair and because I exercise hard every day, my hair feels very dirty if not washed that day. All of the Madison Reed colors faded quickly despite using shampoo and conditioner for colored hair. 4) Because of all the aforementioned issues, I found dying my hair to be a burden so I would extend the time between coloring and was unhappy with how my hair looked until I colored again. This shampoo has mostly solved my problems. I wash daily so saw results at four weeks. At six weeks the color looked fairly natural. Yes, in certain lighting conditions, the grey hair has a dark reddish hue, but again, still better than any of the red/orange hues in the dyes I was using. This shampoo allows me to easily maintain my color so my hair looks good every day. I have naturally shiny hair, so much so that throughout my life I've been asked how I make it so shiny. I always reply, "Daily washing". Dye dulled my shine and made my hair look flat in color. No dimension. This shampoo has allowed my hair to shine again. Best of all, no allergic reaction. I am vey happy that I found this product. Some things that could be improved: 1) I definitely need a deep conditioner. Light conditioner did not work. I could barely get a wide-tooth comb through my shoulder length hair. 2) Although it doesn't stain my hands (thankful) I noticed that my fingernails have slowly developed a slight tint that is clearly from the shampoo. 3) The smell is OK. Not unpleasant and not pleasant, just kind of odd for shampoo. None of the negatives would make me stop using this shampoo. I have it on auto-ship. I hope the company develops a formulation that gets hair a little darker.10/16/2023 UPDATE***I was disappointed to learn today that this product contains 1,2,4-Trihydroxybenzene which is a genotoxic compound. It was reveiwed by the EU consumer safety panel and they declined the use of it in hair dye and hair darkening shampoo due to health safety concerns. Also, tests in mice show that it significantly increases calcium concentrations in the thymus. As you can see in my above review, that I really liked this shampoo, but will discontinue use and cancel my subscription. Looks like it is back to the hair dyes that I didn't like, but all components are generally recognized as safe in the US and EU. Rats!

I wanted to share my thoughts on the recent change in your shampoo formula. The previous version was absolutely amazing and delivered excellent results for my hair. Although it did stain my fingernails, I found it to be a worthwhile tradeoff for such an effective product. However, I was quite disappointed to find out that this wonderful formula is no longer available. Unfortunately, the new formula doesn't work at all for me, and given my experience, I will not be purchasing it again. Please consider bringing back the previous formula that worked so well. It made a significant difference for me and I'm sure many other customers feel the same way.

I used this because I wanted something to change my greys. This literally did exactly that, and I was intrigued by the fact it was also formulated to help with hair loss and growth….. LIES, lies Matilda! This was the scariest thing I have ever seen with my hair. I have never been one to suffer from mass hair loss in general. I started using this and after about a month my hair looked super healthy and shiny and greys were gone! However, after about two months of regular use my hair started coming out in clumps with every single wash. I washed my hair daily always have because I sweat so much and workout daily. The clump from the picture I showed was just the amount from one shampoo. I started to notice more and more coming out during the day too. And I went and got checked to see if I was in the hair loss stage of hair growth and I was not. I got was starting to thin out and have since stopped using it and went to different products and now am losing significantly less hair and have a bunch of short new growth that I didn’t need to have if I had never used this crap. Don’t use it it’s terrible.

Overall product seems well made. Works slowly over time... not immediately or drastic by any means. If slowly layers a reddish brown that gets darker over each use. Be patient, like a couple of weeks. Pleasant smell, cleans easily. Recommended as a daily as it needs time for color to set and not like instant color coverage. This is my new daily.

Let me start by saying that I don't have a lot of gray hair, but more are coming in every day. I've been buying this shampoo ever since I first tried it at my mom's house. From that one time I could already see a difference in the color of my gray hair and I was sold. I've been using it ever since. I really can't understand why other people have had issues with it. It's pretty easy to use and convenient. I will give some advice as to some of the things I have learned from using it so long. 1) the longer you leave it on, the darker it covers the gray. I put it on before I do anything else and then wash it out halfway through my shower. I read one review that said they keep it on for hours and that seemed excessive to me. My showers are 15-30 minutes long and it seems to work fine during that length of time. 2) I do use conditioner after I wash out the Moda shampoo because it is just a shampoo and not a conditioner. 3) you don't need to use it every day. I use it every other day. 4) it does leave a dark, brownish ring sometimes wherever you put the bottle, but comes off easily if you just wipe or spray it with water.

Overall, the shampoo does turn white hair darker over the weeks. That alone is great for blending grays. But, for those of us with black hair, it looks odd when you go from white and black hair to black, brown, and some white hair. This shampoo turns your white hairs brown, not black, even if you ordered “for black hair” shampoo. If you are looking for one unified color out of this shampoo, get that notion out of your head right now. While this product is a decent way to mask the gray hairs from a distance, those up close may ask you why your hair is various shades of brown, orange, black, and white. If you are looking for a solid color throughout your hair, go with dye. If you want shampoo that changes your hair from white to various other darker colors over a few weeks, get this..
