Temporary suspension from field work
This is the 23rd Bond movie but the 3rd in the Bond-series that star Daniel Craiga’s no-nonsense 007. Following a weaker Quantum Solace in 2008 that suffered from a writers strike, Skyfall is a much superior recovery of form form that is simply very well done from start to finish. With this movie, director Sam Mendes (known at that stage for some fairly thoughtful movies like American Beauty, The Road to Perdition) proves he can deliver spectacular action movies, that much is clear following the traditionally breathtaking opening scene. This he later put in further practice in his brilliant 1917 epos. The exhilirating opening scene is only the proloque that ends with an “Agent down!" message to M by Eve (Naomie Harris) abruptly followed by Adele’s subtle warm title song that is reminiscent of Shirley Bassey’s performance in Moonraker, Goldfinger and Diamonds are Forever). In the role of main villain mr Silva, that only makes an appearance after an hour, it would have been hard to find a better qualities actor than Javier Bardem. Silva is modern day criminal, thriving on cybercrime, yet his odd blond hair style properly classifies him as a traditional Bond protagonist. The movie very well balances familiar and new elements although I struggles a little bit with the reappearance of Bond’s Aston Martin. But all in all you’ll get a great mix of drama, action, and subtle jokes.I occasionally buy some expensive 4K movies, in particular since the whole family is a big fan of the franchise and will revisit the movies in future. I'm glad I did that with this movie. The 4K version offers razor-sharp details with immersive character close-ups. The vista’s and wider scenes are striking as well. The digital clarity remains strong even in the many fast-moving action scenes. The Dolby Vision color grading brings good black levels. The movie comes with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1l that is very dynamic and grand.

The best by far of the Daniel Craig era
I loved this film. It is less violent than recent Bond, more relevant to real life and has introduced a little of the humour that characterised Bond films in the past, but without introducing silliness. Daniel Craig still does not completely convince me, but without losing his darkness, he is more human in Skyfall. One of the criticisms of Bond is that he is outdated in the modern world. The Bourne franchise have suggested that their CIA agent is much more representative of the reality of modern life. The script for Skyfall has actually included this criticism. "M" is under heavy pressure, told that her agency - now explicity MI6 - is outdated and unnecessary, her work and relevance questioned and answers that now the threats are now invisible. The film responds with a cracking tale about cyber-terrorism that is highly relevant to the world of 2012 and all too plausible. Javier Bardem, an icon of Spanish cinema, is a really nasty villian, totally removed from the rather over the top Blofeld or some of the traditional Bond badies who are too ridiculous to be believable.Overall, I was struck by the effort in the film to make it relevant and believable and was impressed with how the criticisms of the franchaise were incorporated into the film.Various of the lost elements of Bond past return. Q is back, but in a guise very different to Desmond Llewellyn or John Cleese. The new Q looks too young to have completed university and is greated by a disdainful Bond with a comment that he still has acne. The bye-play is there, with various sharp exchanges between the two as Q gives as good as he gets for disdain and Q requesting finally with resignation that Bond return his gagets safely in the same way that Qs past have done, although the age of Q handing over a portable neutrino detector that also fires poison darts are long gone.Moneypenny is back too, although her identity is not revealed until the very end of the film. This though is a very different Moneypenny to the fantasist secretary of old. The Aston Martin is back and one of the little highlights of the film is Bond's glee and retrieving it and the way that facing a skermish line of terriorists intent on killing him produces no sort of emotional reaction in Bond, but when they blow up the Aston Martin he completely loses it and is filled with lust for revenge! You can see why many people thought that Skyfall might well get an Oscar nomination for best film. It did not, but it did take home two Oscars: no Bond film since Thunderball in 1965 has won even one.
