The First Rule of Climate Club

Really important climate change novel.
This book gives young people (and people of all ages) actionable things to do at the local level to address climate change. It also addresses chronic illness in a very meaningful way. Highly recommend.

Another great middle school book from Firestone!
My 11 year old LOVES this book. She was already a fan after reading Dress Coded. Both books have revived her interest in reading—THANK YOU! We really hope Firestone writes another middle school novel soon!

Awesome, empowering novel about the climate crisis
This is a wonderful, character-driven novel that also provides useful information about the climate crisis. Although the book doesn't shy away from describing some of the terrifying effects of climate change, it centers the idea that kids can envision a better world that reflects their values and then take real steps toward creating that world. Highly recommended.

Great story about how climate change can affect us!
The First Rule of Climate Club by Carrie Firestone is a wonderful book for students in middle school. When Mary Kate joins a special science program that focuses on climate change at school, she begins to notice how everyday actions have affected our climate and what they can do about it. For example, food tossed out can be used for compost. While working with other students she discovers that the students who are bused in from another area are not treated fairly. Finally, after her best friend has become very ill from tick related diseases, she finds out that these diseases are becoming worse due to climate change. As Mary Kate and her friends create podcasts and begin to fight for climate change, they realize that their mayor is not interested in helping with their cause. After reading The First Rule of Climate Club, I began to think more about what I could do to help with climate change. This book would be a great tool to use to get middle schoolers to think about what they can do to help with climate change. Finally, Carrie Firestone has written a story that is interesting on a very important topic.

So empowering!
t was so much fun to return to the world (and narrative structure) of DRESS CODED, and this is another fiercely empowering, entertaining gem from Carrie Firestone. I really enjoyed this story and it left me eager to take manageable but meaningful steps to do more to combat climate change—I think middle schoolers will feel the same way. Love that there are resources for starting a climate club.

Middle Schoolers take on climate change and more!
This book is my current situation - and my students. I am a middle school science teacher in north central Connecticut. I have students from Hartford and students that have suffered from Lyme disease. I enjoyed the character development of the students and enjoyed reading the application letters to join climate club that were sprinkled through the story. i have already purchased some copies for my class as so many of the issues are directly applicable to my classroom. As an older, "seasoned" teacher, I wish that at least one of the "cooler" teachers could have been older. Maybe Mr. Beam could have been an older librarian?

An Important Book!
An important book! The First Rule of Climate Club should be: PLEASE READ The First Rule of Climate Club by Carrie Firestone. Although hailed as a follow-up to Dress-Coded, this book can certainly be read as a stand-alone novel. I highly recommend The First Rule for teachers, librarians, and students who want/need to be inspired to learn more and make a difference. Although the focus is on climate change, the story also raises important questions about systemic racism and the connections between and among so many problems facing our world. Podcast episodes and letters interspersed throughout the novel, and short chapters will appeal to many middle-grade readers, as will the underlying message that kids have the power to change the world. And the world needs them to do just that!

Well-Written and Timely Middle Grades Fiction
A one-sitting read! When I read middle grade fiction, I generally have another book I’m reading as well. As an adult, I read middle grade fiction because I’m an educator, not because I inherently love the genre. When I read this one, I did not start another novel as this kept me fully engaged for a one-sitting read. The One Rule Climate Club is timely, but not exhaustingly emotional. It tells the story of a select group of middle school students who are concerned not only about climate change and various actions and inactions that are linked to it, but also social issues occurring in their hometown.A superbly written book that gets into the hearts and minds of preteens intent on being the change. I will be purchasing this for my classroom and recommending to librarians and colleagues. I have not read the previous book with the same characters, but have already ordered it.Thank you to Netgalley, Penguin Group Young Readers, and the author for a review copy of this book.
