Still Great!
I read this book years ago. It haunted me. Years have gone by and all I remembered was that it was a good experience, well layered, crafty, sometimes scary, sometimes very scary. Character detail was good the first time I read this. I appreciated this more the second time around just because there's less and less out there now that's scary with complex, well-drawn characters. It didn't disappoint.

Great end to the Blue Rose Trilogy
I'm a big fan of Peter Straub's, especially of his novels Mystery and The Throat. In Mystery, the characters Tom Pasmore and Lamont Von Heilitz are introduced, two crime fighters on the island of Millhaven. Tom Pasmore reappears in The Throat with a lot of other interesting characters including Tim Underhill and John Ransom once again solving a mystery that starts in Vietnam and ends in Millhaven. Can't say enough good things about this novel. The characters were interesting, the plot intricate and absorbing, and the writing captivating. It's a long story - over 700 pages - but I finished it in a little over two days.I'd highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good mystery but I would encourage reading Mystery first to really get the most out of this book. You won't be disappointed.

Gritty and Scary!
Had a bit of trouble getting started. I'm not finished with the last book, but the first two were really page turners. I found myself transported to the various locations and had a hard time putting the book down to go to sleep. This last one is, I think, the most disturbing but I keep turning the page.I think it's pretty neat how they are written so that they can be "stand-alone" volumes or read as a Trilogy. Meeting new charachters in each book and running into charachters you have "met" before in one or both of the preceeding books. All three are gritty and very scary. I've enjoyed all of them so far. I do love the way Straub spins a tale and draws the reader into the story.

Best mystery suspense book I've ever read!
I've never read a book that kept me on the edge of my seat more than this one. There is real suspense in this book. The scene where the main character is in the fog at night and can't see and the killer may be in the fog waiting to kill him, amazing!!! I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to find out what was gonna happen! And the mystery was great, the author keeps you guessing, at some point you will suspect every character in this book until you finally find out who it is, AMAZING!!! Loved it, this is my second copy! I read this book for the first time over twelve years ago and it's still the best mystery suspence book I've ever read.

A good read
Part of the "Blue Rose" trilogy and superior to Mystery in my opinion. But Koko is still the best of the three. In this book it seems that the "Blue Rose" murders of years ago are being imitated by another killer, perhaps an admirer of the original killer. The mystery is satisfactory although the trail to its resolution is more needlessly meandering than it should be in my opinion. Underhill returns to his home town to do what the police cannot, solve the crimes. Tom Pasmore (who is set up as a kind of anti-social Sherlock Holmes) helps a bit but not enough (again in my opinion) to justify the kind of praise he gets regarding his crime solving abilities. He strikes me as just a shadow of Holmes. Still, overall,a good read.

Engrossing finish to the Blue Rose trilogy.
Very well written book. Truly ties together the first two and still manages to surprise. Finishing the trilogy will give the reader an understanding of the darkness, madness and the descent into murder.

I can see why Nick Cave would recommend it
Surprised at the graphic violence for a book that is so well written.
