Life Between Buildings: Using Public Space

Wonderful
Of course, brilliant. This is a modestly-produced book, not very shiny, not even very eloquent, but the ideas are powerful.

Essential Architectural Reading
Incredible insight into the urban environment, a book ahead of its time and one I can't recommend enough for referencing.

Great and inspiring
I found the book accidentally at university and was paying a great amount of money to the library when forgetting to return the book back to the library over and over again. I had to buy my own, finally.

A major work in understanding city spaces
Gehl's book, a revised classic since the early 70's, focuses not on buildings but on the life between the buildings: how people move, play, interact in different cityscapes. Contrasting medieval plazas with big concrete architecture and using examples from the various Nordic capitals, he shows how people move between buildings with different levels of social interaction from necessity to idleness, depending on the spaces they move in. Schematics on Italian renaissance towns interact with 60's architecture and newer examples. For me, the lessons of this book has become the code to use when trying to understand the charms of the cities I visit and the neighbourhoods I don't visit due to having no charm at all. Not an architect or anywhere near, I still found it one of the most interesting reads of many years, and would recommend this book to anyone interested in cities, in travel, in human interaction.

Beautiful writing
This was one of the books I read to support my thesis work. It was fascinating to read the author's observations and propositions about public spaces. Reading it was a happy memory.

Not matching the reputation of the author
The book reads like lecture notes, but doesn't supply the evidence to support his claims. The references used are mostly the standard ones to support street-live oriented planning. It is interesting to see not one street scene from a truly high density environment, if I am not mistaken.Surprisingly for a book on architecture, it is awkward to read with a too narrow margin, and generally small images.

humane wisdom
Gehl observes carefully, draws conclusions wisely, expresses himself clearly and simply. He leads the reader to ponder fundamental values in the building of homes and cities. He favors the human dimension and promotes human values as opposed to the monumental or merely decorative.
