Ajanta Caves: History and Mystery

The narrator's pronunciation was odd in places. The film began with some unnecessary filler. But once it got to showing the caves, the film improved. The film could have been better if the diagram of where the different caves are located had be integrated more into the film; as it was that part was done so quickly that it was hard to grasp. This is not a film that you can rewind and see part of it over, all you can do while it's playing it to stop it and restart it---kind of primitive...

-Having first seen the Ajanta caves in John R. Hale's excellent course on the roots of religion for the Teaching Company, I ordered this video, being somewhat apprehensive about its quality.I need not have been. The video is beautifully filmed, and the comments intelligent, although I was somewhat put off by the voice of the narrator.The caves themselves, a UNESCO World Hertiage site (you can find them on UNESCO's website) are spectacular. Although I generally am neutral about Indian art, the paintings in the caves are strikingly beautiful and I believe universal in their artistic appeal. Not to be missed.

Petra, Puma Punku and Ajanta all have the same thing in common, awesome architectural designs, with awesome planning in primitive times, with limited to no reading/writing abilities from the locals at that time. from a machine tool maker, a mechanical engineer and architect’s perspective, the real question is, who did it? Hint, hint . . . . . copper chisel and diamond head tools could not have created such perfect cuts!

A little dry but interesting none the less. A definite watch for anyone interested in ancient art, Buddhism, or cultural wonders. I do recommend it.

Excellent DVD and very informative ...worth having as photography now limited ... only disappointment is I have to view it on my laptop in region 2 area.
