If you are afraid of using man made pesticides like me, you probably have gotten onto looking at products like these to reduce aphids and other predatory pests for your prized trees. After reading many horticulturalist websites, Tanglefoot was recommended. After using this for several months along with periodic water spraying, there are very few aphids on my trees. Word of advice - do not apply directly to the bark as it may kill the tree. What I did was place an aluminum foil collar around the trunk then fixed it with wiring. Then I applied Tanglefoot to the aluminum collar. I also sprayed the leaves with a thin spray to wash off the aphids every other day. I gathered that no ants being able to get the the leaves meant no more transportation for the aphids, so the trees are now very happy!Pros: Cost effective, product that works wellCons: Very messy so be prepared to wear nitrile gloves, do not get on tree bark or it may harm the tree

Can kill innocent birds
I had thought this product worked by trapping small insects and by shooing away birds who don't like stepping in the stuff. However, it traps and potentially kills birds. I rescued a woodpecker stuck in the stuff, then tossed out the tube, and cleaned the area where I had originally applied it.

Need the kind in the round can that looks like a rubber cement can
Not the right kind for yellow flies here in Georgia... Need the kind in the round can that looks like a rubber cement can... This stuff in the tube is brown, not clear, and it does nothing at all for yellow (deer) flies... I can't even find the brush on can kind of Tangle Tree any more.. Did they stop making it? Do not waste your money on this tube stuff

meh.
I had mixed results. Larger ants had no trouble traversing even as I applied thicker coats. Smaller ants would get stuck. It seems to attract lots of gnats and as the corpses get stuck and pile up, the ants can traverse over the corpses. Also, for very young trees, I have them caged to protect from deer...any branches that touch the cage give the ants another avenue to bypass the tanglefoot......remove the cages and the deer eat your branches to nubs. Mother nature just wins. Fact of life.

Much as described - a mechanical trap, low toxicity or nontoxic
I'm unsure of the effectiveness of this product in my intended application - against squash vine borers. No borer damage evident yet but I've not seen the egg-laying fly yet either. I used this product in combination with aluminum foil to block access to the squash main stem from the leafy areas of the plan. I'll know better in about 6 weeks if this combination defeats this very damaging insect.Yesterday, when we discovered ants in the house, I used this product to "draw a line" they wouldn't cross. Worked well. I just smeared some onto pressure sensitive tape on the dishwasher door.

solved my problem
I use this super sticky product on my Geiger Tree that periodically gets attacked by Scales. The ants work with the Scales so it's necessary to prevent the ants from crawling up the tree. For this purpose Tanglefoot works great. I took a plastic strip and taped it together around the trunk of the small tree. I then applied the Tanglefoot to that strip. Within a day or two there were no more ants on the tree and the scale infestation went away shortly after.

Works great
I used this for the past two summers and noticed immediately that the ants could not pass over it. I used a plastic tape to wrap fruit tree trunks then slathered Tanglefoot on the tape. Both trees were fertilized last year then this summer we had our first harvest of pest free plums and nectarines. Great product and organic.
