Since the 1970s, the Taiwanese government has actively encouraged the production of tea in this region. A festival is still organized so, that, people can taste the new harvests and learn the basics of the gong fu cha preparation method. This is festival follows the annual spring tea contest. There are more than 4,000 growers in this region who use the Dong Ding name for their teas, even if it is not actually, grown on the mountain. About 20 years ago the government designated three "official" Dong Ding growing regions. They are Zhang Yu, Yong Long and Feng Huang. Dong-ding Oolong Tea: is a kind of treasure in Oolong tea category, which tea leaves resemble a half ball, with color of blackish green. And its edge present faint yellow. After brewing, its tea water present golden, which close to the color of amber, with a special fragrance of ripe fruit. And its tea water taste mellow and thick with obviously baked flavor. As its originated from frozen top of the mountain, so named Dong-ding Oolong Tea. And as its tea production limited, which is particularly valuable. Dongding Oolong is lightly fermented,best known in Taiwan and honored as the "Holy tea product". It is from Dongding tea garden of the high altitude. Its annual production is limited, so it is especially precious. Dongding tea has a long history. Taiwan History wrote that Taiwan has a long history of producing tea. The old annals claimed that Shueishalian (now Puli in Nantou County, Sun Moon Lake, Shuili, Chushan.etc.) produced tea. The color is like sunglo, and it can also avoid malaria and hotness. So far, the tea coming from these five cities is sold in the market, Yet Dongding oolong is the best. However the yield is very small.
