Sky Runner: Finding Strength, Happiness, And Balance In Your Running

A nice blend of personal stories, inspiring segments, practical tips, and exquisite photography
I live with my daughter and three of their four children. My 18-year-old grandson is a runner, trains every day, and participates in a race once a week. My 11-year-old grandson plays competitive soccer, and runs every day to build up endurance for running an entire game on the soccer field. In spite of their age difference, the boys often leave the house together in the early morning while it’s still cool (we live in Texas) and train together. I bought “Sky Runner” by Emelie Forsberg to read up on the sport, and see if I could better understand my grandsons’ obsession with running and training.“Sky Runner” by Emelie Forsberg is a stunning book, well balanced with a blend of personal stories, inspiring segments, practical tips, and exquisite photography. Every few pages you will find sections with warm-up or yoga exercises, training tips, and recipes for healthy eating. Emelie is very open about her decision-making process, from when she decided to drop out of college to run competitively to how she selects the events in which she will participate. I especially enjoyed Emelie’s accounts of events in which she participated, starting with her first race and culminating with her attempt to reach the summit of Cho Oyu at 25,590 feet.I have more of a sedentary personality – I do well to take the dog for four walks a day around the block. But I am also a creative person and I found a lot to internalize with regard to self-discipline and motivation. I plan to leave this book on the coffee table. Neither of my grandsons are readers; they are more into sports. But I’m hoping the beautiful photography entices them to pick up the book and read it. I think it will impact the way they approach training for their chosen sport.

Her story, her way, our pleasure to read.
Sky Runner is one of those books that cannot really be categorized easily:It has information about her races, but it's not a race journal. It has information about places she's been, but it's not a travel guide. It has training insights, but it's not a training planIt has beginners Yoga advice, but it's not a Yoga bookIt has beginners gardening tips, but it is not a gardening book.It has nutrition information and recipes, but it's not a cook book or diet guideIt has tales of her childhood, but it's not an autobiographyIt has lots of photos (the majority taken by her husband, ultra-legend Kilian Jornet), but it's not a picture book.It is her story, as she sees fit to tell it, and it is a very good and, like her, fast read. If you want some insight into the other half of what could probably be considered to be "the" elite couple in sky running and ski mountaineering, this is the book to read.Like her husband Kilian, she is a rather private person who opens up in an effort to explain what motivates her through life, and she does a very good job (probably better than he does in "Above the Clouds: How I Carved My Own Path to the Top of the World", but it may also be due to her having a better translator). She uses a free-form/top-of-mind approach to her writing inside the major chapters, which I think works. As far as I can find it is only available in hard cover, but with the photography and layout she chose, I don't think any other format would work as well. For those bibliophiles, the book is very well bound and use high quality paper. For the photography purists, Kilian is a much better runner than photographer (there were a few shots used that made me cringe).

Beautiful photography, and inspiring book.
The photography was beautiful, and the scenery was stunning. The personal stories were intriguing, and overall insightful. I really loved the tips and motivating quotes as well, which gave me something to use in my day to day life. After reading through it I'm now using it as a side piece on my table in the living room. Which is perfect because one of the first things my guests can do when they come inside my house is be greeted with something to make them smile. From start to finish I enjoyed reading this book, and most importantly I gave it to my father who enjoyed it as well. He's really sick and sometimes gets depressed because of his state. The beautiful photography and just how motivating the book was, really worked cheering my father up. We had a great talk about how wonderful it would be to go and be able to experience some of the places shown in the book. Truly a memorable experience for me. I'd highly recommend giving this book a try.

Beautiful book, well written with great information
If you are looking for an in-depth book about running and training to teach you how to be a world-class mountain, ultrarunner, keep searching. If you want the most beautiful book about running you have ever seen that is filled with wonderful stories, tips, recipes, and photos that will inspire you, buy this book now. I enjoyed this book from start to finish and recommend it to anyone looking to get some insight into Emelie's mindset and learn a little more about her story. It is a quick read and you could easily skip around reading the sections that interest you most. The exercises, workouts, and training specific details are nothing new and you could find similar routines and information on the internet for free. This book is about inspiration and imagining the possibilities, more than a strict how-to guide.

Nice Illustrations
I quite enjoyed reading this book, as it goes over a wide variety of topics. The book is detailed but not overbearing, short but doesn't leave you feeling like you are missing out. The cooking section in the book was an unexpected touch, however, It was enjoying as well.Definitely recommend as this book is a nice read!

Awesome
I really like the pictures in this book, they're very high quality and give you a great image of the authors view. I liked the inspiration from her journey as a runner. It was interesting to see how devoted the author is about her passion. This book is great, however, I would've liked to see more high level tips.

The best running book I have ever read
This is quite simply the best running book I have ever read. Read is the wrong word, I savoured it, every bit of it, the writing, the photographs, the exercises, the recipes, the yoga poses and the insights into what motivates Emelie. It is not a book, it is a cornucopia of running stuff.Emelie's love of running shines through in the words as does her passion for the mountains and is very well matched by the beautiful photographs taken by Kilian Jornet. He is a very accomplished mountain runner and skier; author of Run or DieThe sub-title Finding Strength, Happiness, and Balance in Your Running is very appropriate as that is exactly what she does and wants other people to do. The book is not a running manual, it is a manual for a running life. Emelie is a Salomon athlete and has won many races, but she is determined not to let that interfere with the pure joy of running.I am going to keep this book close to hand and if I ever lose my running mojo I will know what to do; re-read Sky Runner.

Beautiful photographs but could have used some editing.
I have been following Emelie Forsberg and Kilian Jornet for a while. Thus, I got quite excited hearing about her book and preordered it on amazon (English version by Hardie Grant books). The book is beautifully done. I love that it is hard cover, with beautiful photographs and great print quality. However, I was expecting more from this book. I guess this book can be described as Emelie's life story. For much of the book, it feels like she’s rambling, like we are just reading random thoughts she put together in a blog post, where she sometimes repeats her thoughts a few times over. A lot of the articles also contain grammatical errors and repeated words (eg, “than” instead of “then” and sentences like “So far our acclimatization plan works so far.”). I also felt like she shared some bits and pieces about her background, but not nearly enough. Overall this book feels like a collection of snippets and thoughts from and about Emelies life, but nothing concrete. The photographs are beautiful, and I was inspired by some of her thoughts. I also like the workout tips, yoga poses and the recipes. I guess one could see this as a coffee table book, to flick through from time to time. Overall, I had expected and hoped for more. I feel like some thorough editing could have made so much more out of the book and I hope the editors take this to heart for her next book project. Nevertheless, I will keep this book as a source of inspiration, especially to look at the beautiful photographs of Emelie running in the high places of this beautiful world.
