Q: Can anyone point out the differences to the almost 50% cheaper and newer MINDSTORMS EV3 31313 kit? Is it worth to spend $300 more for this older kit??

Probably not. The only reason it's price is higher is because they don't produce the that set anymore. Lego sets always go up in value once they stop making that set (i.e. UCS Millennium Falcon went up 10x).

Q: do girls like this toy? it seems very male-centric. is it possible to create a cat robot?

It depends on the girl. I am a 51 year old woman, who JUST got her first Legos (the Mindstorm EV3 robotic set) and am thrilled with my husband for noticing how much I've loved helping my nephews with their Legos at Christmas vacations. So, as a girl I wanted to play with my brother's trucks, NOT the dolls that Grandma forced on me each time I touched the trucks, rofl. I also got a B.S. in Computer Science, so even though I'm "girly" too, I have to say I have pursued 50/50 "guy" and "girl" activities and interests in my life. Know your gift recipient... if you have a shy girl it's harder to know. Does she "show no interest" in Legos that are already in the family because she'd have to tussle with the boys to even touch them? Does she have a fear of the learning curve, or prefer to do things in the privacy of her own room? :-)

Yes, but application is 32 bit. Long answer: Currently EV3 Home Edition Software is available for Win32 and OSX. Windows versions from Windows 95 to Windows 8.1. can run Win32 applications
