Can I see germs with this?

I'm afraid not. Even with the 2x Barrow Lens and the 20x reticles, you will only get 90x and you need 500x or 1000x to see germs and bacteria.

I have the amscope sm-4b, where i would like to increase the distance from the ambient light to the unit i am soldering. would the 15x lens help ?

I bought an SM05 0.5x Barlow lens for my unit. This increases the working distance (and reduces the magnification) by a factor of 2. For me, it made it way easier to solder under. You can get these in different magnifications, but to increase working distance you need a magnification less than 1.

Does this have 40x magnification ?

Yes. It’s 7-45 x. It’s a variable microscope. It has a knob that you turn to move the objective lenses in or out which magnifies or demagnifies the object. You can get a Barlow lens that goes on the bottom to either decrease the total magnification from 7-45x to 3.5-22.5x,for example. You can also get one that magnifies it more. A 2x Barlow would be 14-90 x. FYI the knob is continuous with turning. So it can be 11x,12x,13x,etc. In other words,it not a number of set magnifications.
