State We're In MMXIV

I think it is a little bit of a questionable exercise every time Tyla re-records one of the classic Dog’s D'amour album, records like “Graveyard of empty bottles” & "Dynamite jet saloon ” are such perfect albums (that hold such affection in the hearts of Dogs fans), it seem like a pointless project to undertake. But the same can’t be said of “The State I’m in”, which was rush recorded in a single day, then acoustic guitars & keyboards were later over-dubbed with out the bands consent, ever Tyla’s art work was left off cover. So you get two versions of the album (which is nice), one electric, the other acoustic (there’s only the acoustic version of “Can’t get you out of my Head”).The electric version has a nice laid-back slightly woozy feel to the music (no doubt due to the vast quintiles of real ale consumed whilst the originally album was written & recorded, I’m sure the band are all Tea-total these days!).The acoustic version of the album is where the music really comes alive, with the songs stripped down, filling them with raw emotion, the highlight’s being “Heroine” with a nice accompanying organ, & “State I’m in” with a piano given the song added poignancy.DVDMusic videos for electric versions of:“Wicked & wide awake”“Unconscious boy”“Heroine”“How do you fall in love again?”Low budget, pretend live in the studio, there ok & it is nice to put faces to the names of the band members.Acoustic live versions of:“Unconscious boy”“State I’m in”“How do you fall in love?”Unfortunately Tyla is properly miked up, so he guitar drowns out his vocals a little, which is a shame.DVD Extras:Original promo videos for“State I’m in”“How do you fall in love again?”Great nostalgic films, certainly takes you back to the hay-days of 80’s rock. You also get Tyla & friends talking about the making of the album, Tyla is hilarious recounted his misadventures & is on par with Jeff Lynne & Ozzy for telling antidotes.I nice cherry on top of the cake, but one does feel that most of DVD footage will be on Youtube within a couple of weeks.Great liner notes & artwork accompany the CD/DVD; there has been a real effort to make this album worth purchasing, & I think because of the circumstances surrounding the original release it's well worth it, & a good if late addition to the Dogs back-catalogue, just a shame the first version couldn’t be re-mastered.
