Book ReviewSCHREINERMasters of Twentieth-Century Costume JewelryTake notice fashionistas and vintage jewelry collectors: There is a newly recognized master of twentieth-century costume jewelry. The brand, and the hardcover book are titled: SCHREINER. The visionary vintage costume jewelry collector and co-author is Carole Tanenbaum. She grew up in New York City and now lives with her family in Toronto. Her investigative reporter, and co-author is Eve Townsend, who holds a MA from Ryerson University and is an expert in the history of costume jewelry.Move over, Chanel and Dior, the Schreiner brand is a vintage competitor. The Schreiner company and brand were founded during the early 1930s in New York and came to be recognized for fashion, glamour, and quality. The SCHREINER book was just published by G Arts is a “must read” for fashionable women, celebrities, and jewelry collectors alike. The book presents incredible, carefully-selected Schreiner jewelry, which is part of the Carole Tanenbaum vintage jewelry collection. The book’s beautiful photography of this jewelry has extraordinary visual appeal on its own. The personal recollections of the Schreiner family and the historical tour of the company provide additional reach and fresh knowledge. My personal favorites among the jewelry are the “milefiori” (thousand flowers) examples found on pages 142, 143 and 144. The cartouches used by Schreiner were marked Schreiner New York, and then Schreiner. (page 190).You can begin or continue your search for Schreiner jewelry in your mother’s or grandmother’s jewelry drawer, in a visit to an antique shop or show, at your local thrift shop, with your favorite jewelry dealer, or with your on-line search.Dean J. An absolute MUST HAVE for Schreiner collectors!
I've found many helpful books on the subject of collecting vintage costume jewelry, but this is by far one of the most beautiful books I have in my collection. If you're collecting Schreiner you need this book to help you identify the more obscure or early unsigned pieces that you might not otherwise recognize. It was only after reviewing this book that I realized I had lost opportunities on unsigned jewelry pieces and related items I didn't even know Schreiner made. The quality of the paper and photographs used in the book are without equal. Contrary to another viewer's comments that more photographs are needed, IMHO this book chock full of many beautiful color photographs of Schreiner pieces from the early days to the ending of an era. You can see and feel the passion of the authors, Carole Tanenbaum and her protégé Eve Townsend with every turn of the page. The book is right-sized for easy handling at 228 pages. As to comments that no jewelry values are included in the book, that's true, but since collecting is a very fickle activity values become quite subjective to each individual collector and most books that contain values become outdated very quickly. Construction techniques are discussed, and while I would have liked to see more photographs of the back sides of the jewelry, I have no regrets buying this masterpiece.

One of the Best Books on Fashion Jewelry EVER!!!
What a wonderful book. The jewelry is gorgeous and so well photographed as I knew it would be. But, the really big surprise, is the story of the company, the family who founded and maintained ownership and control for its entire life -- all researched so thoroughly and written just as well.I have a number of books on vintage costume jewelry and have to confess, mostly what I do is look at the pictures, and then read about a particular piece, designer, era of special interest. But, this book I read from the beginning to the end --- after looking at the pictures from start to finish, I confess. The story of the Schreiner/Albert family was so compelling, and I am so grateful for their work, their jewelry, their story, and to Carole and Eve for bringing all of this to us. How fortunate we are that they were able to track down members of this family and obtain their history for all of us to enjoy. And, one more thing -- the size of the book is just right. It is just right for sitting and holding on your lap/tummy. This is a book that functions well for the reader.

This book is a work of art
I have been a huge fan of Schreiner jewelry for a long time. Also a fan of Carole Tanenbaum. The book is marvelous -- I was so sorry when I came to the end. The photos are beautiful andthe story wonderful.... I would have liked notations if the pieces were signed, as so many were not.... I would have really liked to see the backs of many of pieces, I realize this would be cumbersome and expensive for author but I really want to know and it would be such an education as I will see limited pieces in real life.Do not hesitate to buy this book, if you love Schreiner and vintage costume jewelry you will be glad you did.

Interesting Schreiner facts.
I was under the impression that the pieces in the book would be assessed for current value, but there were no current price estimates of the jewelry. Also, I was hoping for a broader look from the beginning to current times, the reason behind the changes, etc. a little disappointed in light of the price I paid.

This book is a must have for any costume jewelry collector. I have loved Schreiner for years and have seen many many of their designs but Carole has managed to find the rarest of the rare and has many many pieces that I have never seen before. And it's not just a pretty picture book, it has a significant amount of very valuable research. If you buy any book, buy this one. Well worth the price. It is a 10 out of 10!

Fascinating
Good insight the brand and designs and how the author developed her fascination with costume jewellery - and Schneider in particular - into a thriving business. Beautifully produced, with a very good level of detail (not just photos, although there are beautiful photos aplenty). A detailed history of the brand which will satisfy aficionados of jewellery and costume jewellery, rather than being just a coffee table book.
