Light and Shade in Watercolor
Another excellent Hazel Soan book! It's not a large book, but has so much detailed information about light and shade In watercolor paintings. In her usual way of explaining in concise, easy to understand terms, she gives examples of her illustrated paintings, along with details on the how and why certain colors were chosen to give particular effects. Light sources, warm and cool colors, tone, strong darks and lights and their importance are some of the areas covered, and so much more. This is a welcome addition to any watercolor painter's library!

Excellent art/instruction book by my favorite watercolor artist!
Hazel Soan, at least for my taste, is the master at loose, yet stunning watercolor painting! This book is a huge help to us newbies in learning how to handle shade and light. All of her books are wonderful and a delight to study!

I use this book so often for reference
This is, to me, a great book on light and shade--very important in watercolors. I also have Michael Reardon's, Thomas Schaller's, and Ron Stocke's books. Soan's book is very easy to read and see from examples. I also have her Painting People Quickly book, another good one.

Very clear explanations
Hazel Soan’s writing style is clear, concise and on point. I ordered both this and “Watercolor Rainbow”. I enjoy reading and referring to both but if I could only choose one it would be this one as it covers more.

Always searching for the right way of portraying a color when in shade without killing the watercolor. This is the solution! Found it

A wonderful book
A lot of very inspiring examples to assist in understanding the concepts being explained. One of those books that I browse through again and again to get ideas and motivation.

This is the best watercolour book I own
Art is all about playing with light and atmosphere (as well as colour and form) and this book tells you everything you need to know about it in watercolour. It is well laid out, easy to read, very informative and inspiring. Her range of subjects is impressive too - urban landscapes and landscapes, people, animals, flowers she paints it all. There is well over a hundred beautiful paintings to demonstrate all the information. She gets it, she's a master of the medium and at one with watercolour - and above all she helps other people get it too! I admire many professional watercolourists, but Hazel has officially become my watercolour guru. I feel so enthusiastic about experimenting and having fun with my own watercolours now, with beautiful books like this to guide me on.
