It's about the journey.
Shaughnessy lends us a glimpse into what for most of us would be a particularly dark chapter of life - of love, of loss, of neverending nights of drunkenness and mornings-after. But what shines through is not only the base for a cure, but a story of one man's journey, failures, and countless anecdotes and historical teachings on the art of drinking and attempting to stem the tide of the inevitable hangover. If you are a fan of investigative journalism, or imbibing of spirits, or both, this is a pretty fun read.

Cure works for me!
I heard the author interviewed on NPR and I’m not gonna lie, I bought this book only for the “cure”. I thought it was too good to be true. The book arrived 2 days later and after about 40 bucks at the health food store I had the master concoction. ‘‘Tis the season.... if you know what I mean, I had a perfect canvas to try the somewhat intimidating mixture. I followed the directions with hopefull intentions. I passed out, 6 hours later (that reminded me, I need to buy some dark blinds) and sure as heck it worked for me! A little tired due to the lack of sleep, but with the amount of alcohol I had drank I was for sure doomed for a rough day. I feel fine. The author does have a disclaimer that it might not work for everyone. Overall buy this book if you drink and what to limit the hangover- if anything he deserves to be rewarded for this quest.I will not give out the recipe, as you should support the cause and buy the book.

Don’t drink and read
Interesting but it gets a bit repetitive until the end. The last few stores were the most interesting. This is just more than you need to know about hangovers.

Great Read! If the cure actually works this man deserves a Nobel prize
Like most people I heard about this book after listening to the author's interview on NPR. Spoiler: He doesn't actually list his cure until like page 300, but if you just google it the cure is listed in several interviews and promotional articles. It's not a secret so if that's all you want you don't need to read 300+ pages. The read is completely worth it even if the cure does not work. I haven't given his recipe a test drive yet but I'm hopeful. The book stands by itself. It is a long series of personal drinking stories woven together with great historical an pop culture references. The author, if everything written is true, has a tremendous capacity to endure suffering and push past the point where others would stop which is one of the fundamental ingredients of a great story. This guy would be my kind of drinking buddy. Here's to you SBS. Cheers!

Quick, informative, entertaining read
I really enjoyed this book. Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall delivers an entertaining, well researched and philosophical look on drinking and hangovers. He discusses the history of drinking and the many "cures" for hangovers, while sharing his own mitigating concoction of supplements, which I will certainly try. And he does not shy about the many ugly and tragic losses from alcohol abuse in his own life. As an ER nurse I see the horrors of alcohol abuse daily in my work and it should be taken seriously as a public health issue with properly funded research to help mitigate it's debilitating effects on who can not stop.

Received a draft, not final, copy of the book
This was a *draft* copy, not an actual final print of the book. There were several typos. As for the content, it was pretty long-winded and overwritten. But I guess I'll never know whether the final version was better.

it wasn't what i was expecting. the book was too long for the ending being the way it was.

Excellent read, clever, profound, very entertaining
I downloaded this in the midst of a very miserable metaphysically bad hangover (a work's night out with little memory of how it ended but a debacle getting home and haunted feeling), its also Scotland in February. It was a cure in itself - humourous, warm and a very likeable personality comes through in it. There is a great mix of travel writing, study of people, fun, literature, history, philosophy and chemistry. It is meticulously researched and not only from an armchair. The author has interviewed a wide range of people, treating everyone - from scientist to witch to bar tender - with warmth and respect, but some very well-observed colmedy there too. The end is not what I expected, but sublime and really useful and thought-provoking. Im glad I had that hangover now. A few things the author didnt mention though: ukha, heiknz tomato soup, lime juice cordial taken neat, and ukon.

Great read and way more about the journey and adventure than the cure he found.
I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend. Don't really drink enough to need the cure (not in this decade anyway), but I heard it was well written and full of hilarious anecdotes and adventure. I can honestly say it is a great read and well worth picking up even if you don't need the hangover cure. Have not tried the cure, but given the amount of extensive research the author did before making his recommendation, I have to think there's some truth to it. Worth picking up!
