This might seem like a non issue to some but trust me when ...
I studied Chinese in college and even as a native speaker I struggled. HARD. Never learnt to read and write but could speak it, however shabbily, but still I could speak Chinese. My biggest struggle was learning HOW to study Chinese and memorize characters, stroke order, pin ying, etc after years of learning language through the use of 26 alphabet letters. This might seem like a non issue to some but trust me when I say it was very difficult at first figuring out how to start from scratch with basically a foreign system of reading and writing and finding a method that was efficient, useful, and more importantly EFFECTIVE.Which is why I wish I had these back in the day. I had looked for something like this but most were just either not as good or less well laid out in terms of providing the information I needed in a form out that was helpful. And forget about me making my own. Believe me I tried. Whether it was my own terrible hand writing throwing me off, it was like the blind leading the blind, or the tedious and time consuming act of making print outs, typed up definitions, etc. then pasting them onto notecards, there just wasn't a convenient method. Then years after my Chinese classes I found these! Wish I had them back then but oh well. What I like about these is that the cards are not too flimsy, small but legible, easy to carry, and most important all the info you need is meticulously well thought out and organized into a very helpful method for quick learning. These cards have the pinying, stroke order directions, traditional AND simplified characters, definitions and even cooler common uses and other characters they are usually paired with. Plus they have the radicals associated with them. For me that was HUGE because somehow I missed the lesson on radicals and went a long time without knowing I had such helpful hints at my disposal.I really can't say enough glowing things about these handy dandy little helpers. Sure in this digital age there may be and probably is some app or program you could use and save some trees while doing so. But selfishly I gotta say there is something about notecards that always helps make learning easier and with these, as corny as it sounds, it makes it fun too! A must have for anyone learning Chinese or even struggling with learning Chinese! JIAAAAAAAAAAAAAYO!

Great cards but don’t match the HSK lists exactly
I really like these cards and find them more helpful than the popular apps. They fit a lot of information onto each card, so after memorizing the characters, you can go back and learn the radicals, related phrases, strokes for writing. Unlike an app, I can lay them out and write different sentences.**However, even though these are labeked HSK 1&2, they DO NOT follow the HSK lists exactly. If you’re studying for the HSK, don’t assume cards 1-150 = HSK 1. Print out the HSK vocabulary lists to make sure you don’t miss some of the characters.**

More robust version of the great earlier addition
The Tuttle flash cards are my favourite set because they include a translated phrase on the back. But I'd used the earlier edition of the cards so much that I had worn them out (the corners got frayed to pieces and they'd accumulated coffee stains). The content on this new edition is as good as those old set, but now it is made from tougher laminate that resists creasing and dirt & has rounded corners. That means I can review the cards for weeks & carry them around with me without expecting them to get damaged. It's clear that the set has been designed after a lot of user feedback. They even come with a ring, which is presumably intended to prevent them from getting lost. I don't use that ring because it's inconvient for flipping & re-ordering and is bulky. Still, it would be handy for some students. The actual content of the cards is also a slight improvement from the earlier set, with a hand written type face on the back of the cards as well as the front (but it was fine in the older version too).I've given this five star review after using the cards for about two months and suffering no loss of cards from wear. I bought the box only for the cards, and haven't investigated the CD at all. Since the highest review I can give is five I don't need to know what is on that to complete this review. I'd strongly recommend buying the cards, and a free CD comes with them.

Small, Flimsy, Hard to Read
These cards have a lot of study information on them. The problem is they are exactly the size of a credit card. The print is tiny. Imagine your credit card printed in Chinese, and then trying to study off of it! And the print is BLUE not black, so they are even harder to read. The cards are also printed with thin material similar to a throw-away daily bus pass. I probably won't return these, but I would have paid 50% more for the same product with larger and better (black) print and card quality. Yes, they are in fact cheaply printed in China. Irony.

Genuinely useful
This would be a perfect product if the cards were delivered in a smaller and more usable box, one that holds them as one would use them. The carton shown in the picture appears to have been designed to hold the cards on a store shelf.Nonetheless a proper little box was made by cutting up the Amazon package in which the cards were delivered. The cards are easy to use and contain the information that you will most likely want to know: The simplifed character itself, a small representation of the traditional character if there is one, warnings about similarly shaped characters, the stroke order, a few sample words and a sample sentence. Each card is 85mm x 55mm, which is a little smaller than A7 size, and sufficiently stiff to be handled rapidly. The card surface is smooth. The most important thing, however, is that the cards are a genuinely useful study tool with which a diligent student can make progress.

Excellent, provided that you buy the real cards, not the Kindle version!
I have had the "hard-copy" version of Volume 1 for some time, and recommend it strongly to anyone learning Chinese. But I have just bought the Kindle version of Volume 2, and do not recommend it all. I am sure it has the same content as the hard-copy version, but it is very awkward and cumbersome to use, as it does not seem to have been adapted in any way for Kindle. I fear the Kindle version of Volume 1 may be the same. With the hard-copy version, there is a booklet listing the characters in alphabetical order in pinyin and giving the card number, making it easy to find the card you want in seconds. The list is also there in the Kindle version, and I had hoped and expected that by clicking on a character, I would be taken straight to it. Not so. As far as I can see, once you have learnt the card number, you have to scroll through all the cards until you reach it. If it is a low-number card, that may not take too long, but for high-number cards it is very time-consuming.I hope I am missing something (and please tell me, anyone, if I am), but if not, then I cannot recommend that anyone to buy the Kindle version. Buy the real cards!

Decent flashcards for basic Chinese characters
I wanted to refresh my knowledge of Chinese characters, so I decided to buy these cards. Individual characters are clearly presented on one side, and where traditional Chinese characters are also relevant, those are presented on the side as well. I think that you are supposed to copy the character in the order of strokes presented on the bottom of one side of the card, but the card's surface isn't suitable for writing on with a regular pen. Nevermind. On the back of the cards, combinations of characters are presented as phrases. Admittedly, many of the phrases would be difficult for a complete beginner, but they are useful for people who already have a basic grasp of Chinese. Some of the idiomatic phrases, however, are not so useful. The cards are robust enough for repeated handling. There is a ring clip that can just about hold all the cards, but you can't flip the cards when they are all on the ring. It would have been better to have provided more than one ring clip. Overall, I can recommend the cards as something you can keep on your desk or put in your pocket to regularly revise the characters. My goal is to learn all three sets of the flashcards in three years to take HSK level 4. Finger's crossed!

excellent quality
the cards are very high quality + lovely design. they fit easily in my pocket. the reason i'm giving 4 stars is that at my low level (HSK2) i would have liked the example words and sentences to be easier. the cards are advertised as HSK1-2 level, but some sentences or example vocab go beyond that... with over 300 characters it should have been possible to select words and phrases that don't. overall, i am glad i bought this nice little set.

These are so much better than their original sets...
These are a major upgrade to Tuttle's original "Chinese in a Flash" cards. These new cards:1. Are laminated both sides, very easy to handle.2. They have rounded corners - much nicer with better "feel".3. Not stiff card but smooth, flexible card.4. Back's are printed correctly - not upside down.5. Compounds on front are nice large size & clear font.6. The blue print is more friendly and relaxing as opposed to black.7. Comes with a CD that clearly details each card (individual mp3 files).I have the old cards and hated them but these new ones are really great.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Love this cards
Love this cards. Shiny, so quite durable. One ring supplied, I bought extra. Each card has 1 character with stroke order on the front, on the back it gives the radical and components for the character, English meaning, one sentence using the character and an average of 4 words using the character. The cd is useful for checking and practising proper pronunciation. Only found one error, 觉 Jué was given the meaning of 'feet' instead of 'feel'.

Useful learning aid
They are useful as a learning aid for beginner learners or those studying to take the HSK1 paper. Each flashcard has the Chinese character, it's pinyin (romanised spelling), the English translation, as well as some examples of it's use. I think the cards could be improved by maybe adding a small picture to aid visual learners. I've not used the CD yet so cannot comment on it.

HSK 1
the cards are good quality but some characters from the HSK1 book are not present, for example two basic characters are missing, xin = heart and shan = mountain, overall the cards are a good tool to learn the Chinese characters but I feel a bit disappointed that not all characters from book one are present and lots of other characters are.

Mostly like HSK 1 and 2
Seems to follow most of HSK 1 and 2, however those syllabuses are updated from time to time. These flashcards are different from Turtle's other set as the main character is from HSK (instead of being one of 4 alternatives of the character on the back of the card). This makes it easier to review. Also helpful having illustrative sentences using HSK 1 and 2 words. Would recommend for studying HSK 1 and 2. The remaining 49 cards may be for HSK 3 (haven't done that course yet!) so unsure why these were packed this way (HSK 1 - 150 words, HSK - 150 words, HSK - 300 words, etc).

Excellent tool for learning
I have only been learning Chinese a short time mostly using pinyin and could quickly see a need for starting to learn some common Chinese characters. The cards give the basic meaning of the character as well as using it in a sample sentence and listing a few other words containing the character. It is a good way of learning even if you are a busy person. I take a few cards at a time, study them carefully to start with, then review them a few times through the day, just for a few minutes each time.I have learned over half the characters already and I'm now able to read and recognize more and more Chinese characters.Iit's been so helpful and rewarding I would recommend these to anyone who is serious about learning Chinese.

Great cards but CD needs a better layout
These cards are great, I love that they are on a metal ring so that you can swap about and they are a nice convenient size - I carry them about in my handbag and pull them out over a coffee.I have one criticism though. The CD is all over the place. I put it into my laptop to listen while flipping through the cards (in order!) and the CD goes from card 1 to card 10, then 100, 101,102 etc. So I can't just sit at my laptop listening flipping through the cards. That's a little disappointing. I will try the CD in my car to see if it does the same!

Excellent product. I have uploaded it to iTunes so its really handy to use. Only downside is that I have to enter the character details individually into iTunes. I know its a learning experience, but I could probably do without.

Very useful
These are quite expensive, but worth buying if you're learning Chinese characters. Each card has the character printed large on one side, with the pinyin, meaning, compounds, a sentence containing the word etc on the reverse. It also has the stroke order, so is handy for learning to write the characters. Although there's a lot of information on each card they don't feel overcrowded.I found it handy to have a few with me to learn whenever I had a spare 5 minutes. This would need to be used in conjunction with other materials.
