It may work the opening of the lowest setting is quite small...it all depends on how little bicarb you are trying to broadcast and how uniform you want it broadcasted. Sodium Bicarb also has a tendency to pack and compress.

Will it work for salt, de-icer crystals?

Will this item work for spraying the back yard with salt and baking soda to kill feas?

I have never heard of this combination for fleas!! Seems the salt would kill any plant it landed on. But, if you are asking if this spreader is capable of spreading a salt/baking soda combination, yes, I believe it is. Since both are relatively fine, I would think it would take a whole lot!
