Q: Does this have a recipe booklet with it?

Mine came with instructions, the original, plus a photocopied version. Pizzelle recipes are very easy to find online, and very easy to make. I've looked online at several basic Pizzelle recipes with vanilla and/or anise and the ones I've seen are almost identical to those in the recipe pamphlet that came with mine. I even ordered an Italian cookie cookbook and the same recipe is in there. I usually grate in lemon or orange zest too. These Pizzelle makers are vintage so I'm sure they are sold in various conditions. I wanted this particular model because in my research it seemed like the benchmark that others often referred to or compared theirs against. Mine was almost like new and the hot plates as so shiny and polished that I've never had a Pizzelle stick. It's not a teflon surface, just highly polished metal and it's exceptional at releasing the cooked cookies. Good luck. I am very pleased with mine, and hope you will be too.

Q: Why is it so expensive

Calling it "The best" is judgmental and basically meaningless. What features make it "the best?" There are many pizzella bakers listed on Amazon for under $50. Why would anyone be tempted to spend this much money?
