Grimms' Tales for Young and Old: The Complete Stories

God Bless The Bros. Grimm
Not bowdlerized in the least, this full collection of Grimm tales are, well, just that, *grim.*A warning, though to any soul not interested in soulish things, because these "fairytales" are filled with references to piety, goodness, and the love of God. If, however, you have a real and abiding desire to lay up for yourself treasures in Heaven, and assist others in doing the same, then read and re-read these delightful (if sometimes horrific) stories and 'morality plays' as means of sure encouragement along the Narrow Way.As in real life, there are characters here who fail miserably and those who are so pure of heart that they are invited to the Eternal Wedding. This book is certainly a spiritual classic in the same vein as Pilgrim's Progress, Hinds' Feet In High Places, Sunshine Country, Mister God This Is Anna, and, dare it be said, The Imitation of Christ?

Excellent Resource!
This not only contains every story the Grimms wrote/recorded, it keeps them in their original state, so that you aren't reading the cleaned up version that keeps out the parts of a story that modern middle class parents might find "too scary". Children enjoy hearing a story told to them without a book, and this is a great resource for stories to learn and tell orally or while they are laying down for nap time, they can hear you as you read to them. If the story gets a little too scary and they tell you, you can yourself gloss it over but usually, I find the kids can handle it and enjoy hearing a different version of a tale they already know. The only problem for me is that the type is a little small and the stories are crowded together. But all of the stories are there and it's already a pretty thick book so unless You want The Oxford Dictionary Like collection of Grimms Fairy Tales, you make do.

Delightfully Macabre
I recommend Manheim’s translation if you’re after the dark origins of our beloved childhood fairytales. I’ve done a bit of research and his translation is considered closest to the originals, with no dark detail spared.

Great book worth every penny
I ordered this book because I knew I liked it but instead of ordering a used copy for a reduced price I bought a new copy so I had an undamaged book, but in the shipping it must've been taken care of badly because the corners are pushed in and it looks scuffed. Great book regardless of bad handling.

I'm just a bit disappointed
I was expecting a bit more maturity and depth I suppose. Many of the stories seem repetitive and more like a rhyme or a sing song than a tale. Other than reading some of these stories in elementary school and watching Disney's and Hollywood's portrayal I have had no experience with these stories and have no idea about all the translation stuff. I suppose the fault in disappointment is mine. For the most part it is an enjoyable read.

The Best Translation of Grimm's Fairy Tales
This book reads as I imagine the tone of the original collected stories must read. It is well written but not modernized. I have read this book aloud to children and quietly to myself for many years, to the point where it is very worn and loved. It makes a great gift, a classic text that every home should have.

Excellent book, disappointing paper quality
The content of the book is excellent but I'm a little disappointed in the quality of the paper which feels a bit rough and cheap like some dictionary paper.

Great
Just as I expected. Love the book. But then I always love their stories.

Easy to read
Easy to read, but makes you realise that the Hollywood Grimm's Tales are really quite far away from the gruesome reality of these original tales.
