Backward Binding/Cover
The cover/binding is backwards! The front of the book is actually the back cover. Awful! It's a comic book!

What's this?
It’s always called ‘Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas’ and was certainly based upon a story and characters by created by Burton but the original 1993 animated feature was actually directed by Henry Selick, and also owes much of the affection and esteem in which it's held to Danny Elfman, who not only wrote the music but provided the singing voice of Jack Skellington (among others). This Manga version of the familiar story is well illustrated in black and white by Jun Asuka. Some might lament that it’s not in colour but if any story is thematically suited to black and white it should be this one.I imagine that those, like myself, already familiar with the film will be pleased that it’s faithful to the original storyline, although I also suspect that a person coming to the story for the first time through this medium would experience a little difficulty in following precisely what was going on.Ultimately, however, the chief problem with this book is that one is bound to make comparisons with the movie which will always be to the book’s disadvantage thus while those, like myself, who are already fans of ‘Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas’ may well enjoy owning this version its pleasures are vestigial rather than vital in nature.

a great read
I absolutely love THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS . When I saw that it was in manga form I was so happy to read it. I will admit I am a manga virgin and once I figured out how to read it I really got into the story . We have Jack Skellington and his take over of Christmas. The book is done in black and white which doesn't distract from the story telling I honestly think it kind of adds to the story and eeriness of the Halloween What I really liked about it is the characters are so well developed and the artist doesn't really have to change too much to put it in the graphic novel . The author kept it close to the original . This would be a great companion for the movie . People who love the movie will fall in love with this . People new to the nightmare before Christmas will fall in love with it with this book . I will warn you read the instructions on how to read it before you start . don't do the same mistake I did . Check it out you won't be disappointed .

Meh... The dialogue was just too choppy.
Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas by Jun Asuka is a manga filled with lovely artwork!I'm a huge Nightmare fan so I couldn't wait to give this one a read during the holidays! Unfortunately, I didn't really care for the organization of the dialogue and how it guided the story along. The artwork was definitely my favorite element of this manga. The texture and detail was so lovely!Because this manga is rather short, I was worried that a lot of the plot would be left out, but it wasn’t too bad! The storyline captured the main arc of the plot in a decent manner. Though I do think I would have been pretty confused if I didn't already know the story so well.I really liked that the nod to the songs from the film were set in fancy font. However, the transitions between the “song” bits and the normal dialogue in the panels were very abrupt. As a reader that knows all the songs, that kept throwing me for a loop. But if you can stop trying to finish the song, it will flow a little better. However, that being said, the story overall still seemed very choppy to me. More than a couple times I had to go back a panel or two to see if I had missed something...Overall, this was a fun read, but I was just very underwhelmed with it. The artwork was great but the choppiness of the storyline and dialogue really dragged it down...

A bit of an interesting translation, but it's fun to see Jack and friends in this format
'Disney Manga: Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas' by Jun Asuka is a manga adaptation of the animated film. It mostly works.Jack Skellington is the pumpkin king. He is bored with Halloween and wants to branch out to other holidays. He chooses Christmas, but can Christmas survive what Jack and his friends do to it?The art is pretty good and the characters look like they do for the most part. The movie has lots of music and it's here where the adaptation tries and fails. I almost think it shouldn't have tried at all. For the rest of it, the dialogue has been translated from English, then back to English, and this creates a few odd phrases. For folks who love the film, like I do, this is probably a must collect, and it was fun to see Jack and company in this format.I received a review copy of this manga from Tokyopop, Diamond Book Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga.
