Great book to help make friends!
They say the Stomach is a gateway to everyones heart. So if you want to make some friends make some yummy food and why not in a Dutch Oven and why not use amazing recipes. If your missing the recipes this is the book to help you out. I have used a Dutch Oven since I was in scouts. I am now in college and use my Dutch Oven about once a week if not every other week and am always looking for new recipes an this book helped out a lot. Myself and all my friends have liked all the recipes I have cooked from it so far so I am yet to be disappointed. This provides an easy step by step instruction and the ingredients list is in order of the items used(at least the recipes I have looked at). It describes the number of coals needed and also shows the temperature if you end up needing to cook in the oven instead of coals.I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for more recipes to cook in the dutch oven in addition from other books and online.

Great for the first time Dutch Oven user
I really enjoyed this book! There were so many recipes, to fit many taste pallets. Even some vegetarian options! I loved how in each recipe they tell you how many coals to use, and what placement. This is very helpful to the novice dutch oven cook, who doesn't yet know how many coals should be used, or the proper placement! It explains that each coal increases temp. 20 degrees F, and roughly where you should place them for your desired outcome. But each recipe also tells you how many, and the placement. I'm sure once I start cooking often, I will just know how many to use, but until then, this cookbook is perfect!I do a lot of camping in the summer, and I'm tired of eating hot dogs, sausages, and hamburgers. I want to learn to cook better meals, without having to buy a camp stove, and a stand, and use lots of dishes, etc, etc. I love learning to use a dutch oven, and cooking with minimal cost, and minimal damage to the environment!

Comfort Food with some Good Ones for Camping
No, this is not a sophisticated Dutch oven cookbook. There are plenty of those. This is a cookbook that has a lot of easy Ideas for camping meals. You might need canned or dried soup or a bottle of salad dressing or a box of stuffing mix. The book is small in size and easy to take along. There are also plenty of recipes that might be a little time consuming with lots of slicing and dicing--and many ingredients.. Something for everyone. There are a lot of recipes that will be great in our off grid cabin where we have a whole set of cast iron pots and dutch ovens that my mother used. One sourdough recipe has me wondering. It calls for four cups of sourdough starter to make 16 rolls. That is a massive amount of starter for one recipe. I don't think that could be right and I would never want to use that amount in one recipe. I don't think my starter jar can hold four cups. I haven't seen any other recipes that I question and I have read through most of them.Overall, this is a handy book to have and I like it very much.

Delicious!
My husband bought this book along with a 14 inch Dutch Oven. I could not be happier with the success we have had with these recipes. We have tried about ten so far and we have been rating them with a 5 star system, always cooking for a small crowd of at least 6 people. Some I have altered, like I used onions instead of mushrooms, (I am not a big fan of mushrooms) Some we did not alter at all, perfect the way it is written. There has only been one 3 star rating, but the rest were rated 4 and 5 stars. We have cooked these recipes from camping to just hanging out in a friend's backyard. The directions are easy to follow, ingredients easy to find and recipes come out great. Thank you Vernon!

Great book for any dutch oven owner to have!
This is a great little book to have for anyone with a love for ducth ovens! The recipes are down-right delicious sounding and I cannot wait to try some of them! The book itself is a good size, approximately 6 inches by 8 inches and fits well on just about any shelf. The font is easily readable however you might consider having a magnifying glass handy if you have trouble seeing. This book was actually purchased for my grandma and arrived a couple days ago. If she didn't know it was coming I'd potentially consider keeping it, lol! Like I said, great book with some mighty yummy sounding dishes in it. I love it and I know my Mamaw will too!

Lower Quality "Man's Man" Instant Cooking
First, I purchased this book because I like to do my cooking outside in the summer so as not to heat up the house (I have a fire pit). I will say that the book itself is attractive, easy to navigate, and practical for outdoor use (compact size, lay-flat spine, and stiff plastic cover). While I have no doubt the recipes taste good (white flour and sugar are both delicious), I was hoping for more REAL FOOD recipes, not instant, pre-packaged type recipes. I would categorize this as low skill camp cooking almost entirely. The main meat dishes look the healthiest of the four categories (breads, main, side, dessert). Outside of a couple traditional bean recipes, there are exactly zero whole grain recipes, and in the entire book only a couple with green vegetables. (I have to smile, 'cause my family got a good laugh out of how stereotypically "male" that is!) A large portion of the recipes call for instant, pre-packaged foods, like instant potatoes, boxed cake mixes, pop-n-fresh type doughs, canned soups, etc. Will I use any of the recipes? Yes. Again, some of the main meat dishes look appealing for every day type cooking. And I love that for each recipe there are specifics on number of coals on top and bottom to reach specific cooking temperatures. I figure I will be able to modify a handful of the recipes, and at least get enough of a feel for dutch oven cooking that I can begin compiling my own recipe collection.Update 11-13-12: Although not for outdoor cooking, I did find a healthy Dutch oven cook book titled, "Glorious One-Pot Meals," by Elizabeth Yarnell. I am still learning by trial and error how to get the heat right for open fire Dutch oven cooking, but at least I am learning using whole foods.

Exactly what I was looking for
I tried several other cookbooks (bigger, shinier) in this category but this little one is the best. It isn't very big, just 5 x 7 inches. No color photos. But the recipe style is down home and delicious, good for campouts and cookouts. This book is compact and easy to bring along!
