Sacra Pagina: The Gospel of John (Volume 4)
M**E
Essential to anyone undertaking Johannine studies
Francis Maloney, who has a wealth of knowledge of John's gospel, is up there with guys Fr. Raymond Brown in regard to critical exegesis. I think some people are scared off by the term "critical", but Maloney does a great job in this book as not presenting some over the top piety that actually hurts the pursuit of scriptural exegesis, rather he presents a balanced view and consults a wealth of sources in such a way as to really help one understand line for line, what is being presented in the theology of John's narrative. As a student of biblical theology, the Sacra Pagina series is one of my go-to commentaries for approaching the scriptures. I was initially skeptical of critical interpretation and exegesis, but it has helped me to uncover my passion for God's word and the depth that is present therein. Most people have no clue as to the treasure to be found, and works like this opened up a whole new world for me. There's nothing wrong with devotional commentary, but it can be boring at times...God gave us an unbelievable gift in his Word...come and see.

Sacra Pagina commentaries are impressive and useful
I needed a good commentary. This is a VERY good commentary!I liked the verse by verse comments, and the analysis sections with the verse references in bold type. It made digging out material on a single verse very easy.I used this for a graduate course in the Gospels. It was worth the money.

Great Commentary
Fr. Moloney stays true to the text and scholarship, making this text very useful to anyone who wants to understand more deeply the Gospel of John. We gain from his study without being subjected to excessively personal or unusual opinions.

Sacra Pagina (The gospel of John)
Rather theological and deep explanation of the Gospel of John. Probably need some background to read it, but still can speak to all. Translations of parables are excellent and interesting issues are raised. Audience is more likely grad students and those somewhat steeped in theology, although it motivated me to take available classes and fill my gaps.

Great homily preparation helper
This book is a help to put a pastoral insight on the gospels. Thus, it becomes a great help for homily preparation. Not overburdened with exegetical nuances or historical-critical method. Very weel done

Would have liked to see the Greek written in clasical greek letters ...
Well researched and written in understandable non academic language. John can be obscure at times and Francis Moloney certainly helps to bring clarity. Would have liked to see the Greek written in clasical greek letters but that is just a personal preference based on how I'm used to reading the ancient scriptures.

Very scholarly
This commentary is very scholarly and not easily readable for someone who may not have had the opportunity of some academic formation in scriptural studies.
