Don Quixote (Signet Classics)

Footnotes galore!
Not only is this a great story overall, this edition is well translated. The translator/editor adds notes on anything you might want to know throughout the story: historical notes, literary references, how something would be a joke or a pun in the original language, anything you'd hope to know! This is the edition you want.

Nice paperback
As paperbacks go, this is of adequatequality. Would have preferred a bit larger print but will do. It’s nice for the price.

Modern, easy-to-read translation with lots of historical and cultural notes
I have this translation as well as Grossman's (and also the Spanish edition edited by Lathrop). Lathrop's edition (for me) more clearly communicates all the ridiculous humor of Cervantes. I also enjoy his perspective on the inconsistencies in the original (he argues that they were not accidental, but done in fun).

Received in good order.
One of the most hilarious books I've ever read.

Excellent, but with one dealbreaker for me.
This is an excellent book, but with one horrible dealbreaker, so far as I am concerned:The page headers in the main text section of the book are inane beyond words.Every left page header, all 1000 of them, tells me who the author is. Apparently, just in case I had forgotten, and I am too lazy to glance at the cover, or the title page. :-(And every right page header, all 1000 of them, tells me only whether I am in part 1 or part 2 of the book. And this in a book of nearly 1100 pages, and 126 chapters. Simply ridiculous.(There are no page footers.)When I open the book to a random page, I want to know -- immediately and at a glance -- what chapter I am in, so I can get to the chapter I am looking for. I don't want to have to start turning pages until I get to the beginning of that chapter (or of the next) to know what chapter I am in. And then have to repeat that process who knows how many times until I find the chapter I need.Shame on Signet for not grasping this all-too-obvious flaw, and being so utterly clueless about the needs of their readers (i.e., customers). When I say it is a dealbreaker for me, I mean that I will return the book to Amazon for a refund, solely because of this one glaring flaw, irrespective of any other merits or shortcomings the book has .Or, I would very seriously consider doing so, at least.

Thick 920 Page Book, in small print
While wandering about in Mexico, a guy told me it is a good idea to read this book to get a sense of Spanish history.Soon after I realized Cervantes wrote the book in Spanish, and it is my job now to pick the right translation. And also that there is an entire industry around Cervantes, with competing translations and multiple versions of the publications. After reading through many Amazon reviews and doing "research", I picked this book.I am only a few pages in, and I think it is readable. Plus it is a thick book, which I like.
