Sitka Rose

I bought the artists print from one of the whale pages, then I had to buy the book. Love it.... and others by the author and artist. A great combo!

We love this book!

After spending a week in Homer/Kachemak Bay area I picked up this gem in a local bookstore and HAD to bring it home for my girls! LOVE the story, LOVE Sitka's grit and LOVE the illustrations! My girls have requested this at bedtime since I returned home with it!

This is a charming rhyming picture book about an adventurous young girl named Sitka Rose, with colorful illustrations by Shannon Cartwright that teach as much about Alaska as the story does. "Sitka Rose" is a great tale for teaching both girls and boys about interacting with the world around them and taking life into your own hands. A timeless tale spanning from the creation of the Yukon River and the Denali National Park and Preserve all the way up through the Gold Rush, includes numerous Alaskan animals and a map of Alaska. The author, Shelley Gill, and Cartwright are both Alaska residents -- and it shows. A great book!

We purchased this book while in Sitka and thought it was totally charming! Fun story, great illustrations! i even went back for a second copy to send to a friend.

It's a fun tall tale. I love that it's a female character. I enjoyed the opportunity to talk to my girls about tall tales and legends and the fun of making up silly stories just for fun to explain something. It also gave us a chance to talk about some local history (being from Seattle, there is a Gold Rush museum we have visited related to the Alaska Gold Rush).

Beautiful watercolor technique, but disturbing perspective/scale. And the Prose? poetry? Broken meter, poor flow, bad example of lit for young minds.
