Morning Glory On The Vine: Early Songs and Drawings

Joni Mitchell's book Morning Glory On The Vine was originally published by Joni in the early 1970's as a handmade book with only 100 copies produced for her special friends. Now thanks to her obvious go-ahead this lovely hardcover edition is now available to the public. As a long-time Joni Mitchell follower I must admit I jumped at the chance of purchasing it....for the sum of around $20.00. Unbelievable, thanks Amazon. As for its content it is really a most absorbing read and journey through Joni's song, beautiful illustrations and early paintings - all reproduced here. Not all of the lyrics/pictures are for her songs. Some are her poems that also, as expected with Joni Mitchell also stand alone as wee gems. Take for instance early on I Am A Guitar....I am a guitar, if you pick me up, having heard beautiful melodies, played upon me.... Of course for lovers of Joni's music...there is the beautiful painting and lyrics to early hit, Woodstock; her stunning and feeling portrait of former lover and still great friend Graham Nash on the forlorn River with its so sad and poignant lyrics from the classic Blue album and the most effective line drawing for the revealing song Banquet. I could go on and on....but if, like me, you are a Joni Mitchell fan of longstanding, there is much in this beautiful book to delight not only the senses but also the musical mind.

I had this on my wishlist for a bit, but I recently saw it being sold at an extreme discount and I went ahead and gave it a shot. This book, originally put together by Joni for her friends decades ago, is just a lovely collection of her Blue-and-earlier lyrics and her pen and marker drawings as memorably seen on Court and Spark and Ladies of the Canyon. I would recommend this book at a higher price, but with the price it's at currently (3.96!? a dollar less than I paid, too) you are a fool to skip it. By the way, others describe books arriving in bad shape, but my copy came in perfect condition. Here's hoping that between this and the Archives Vol 1 release that we'll get a new collection of her later artwork, such as her killer paintings.

My husband bought me this book for Christmas. As a long time Joni Mitchell fan, I absolutely loved this gift. Many (almost all) of the poems in this book are lyrics to Joni's songs, so you aren't getting a ton of new or rare content from her. Personally, I think the artwork in the book makes up for the well-known poems. Once I finished reading, I thought the book was too beautiful and well-made to sit on a regular bookshelf, so I have it displayed alone on a shelf as decor in our living room.

A beautiful book with the artwork and poetry of one of the great figures of the 1970s!

The Lede: To my surprise, the book is in NEW, pristine condition, with no warping, no smudges, and no markings of any kind, as earlier buyers have experienced.I bought this book with baited breath, having read (and seen the pics) of other buyers receiving "new" copies that were warped and/or had smudges and other marks that should disqualify a book as being new. Quality control issues, indeed!I am such a big fan of Ms. Mitchell that I was prepared to receive a "new" book that had flaws because of the opportunity to have a copy of a book that was originally handmade by Ms. Mitchell and given to friends years ago.As for the actual content, well, if you know Joni, you know that she's an excellent artist and writer and there's nothing I can add.

I bought this book several times for friends and finally got one for myself. The cover is torn and battered. I’m going to send it back for a replacement. Many reviews mentioned this but I hoped I would be lucky. Guess not.

Early ordered this book back in June, it arrived 1 week ago. And each night while in bed I read, interpret, study the images, colors, lines, feel the artist, her words, our history, slip in/out of my own days & experiences of back then & now - Joni being the constant thread in this brief time travel. I am struck by the immense, immense giftedness of this woman. How do you describe a color or a sound......You just had to be there. Or at least study the artist.I highly, highly recommend reading " Joni Mitchell: In Her Own Words". This bio(best bio out there in my opinion) adds, allows, for a deeper understanding and appreciation as you explore the art & writing contained in Morning Glory on the Vine.

Love this Joni book. Been a fan since the 60s. What a voice and artist. Look at my copy of the cover. Thank you Amazon for such a great book deal. Can't believe the cheap price of such a wonderful item. Cheers. John Grantham.

I bought a 'new' copy of this book but the cover is smudged, the spine is damaged and the paper cover is crumpled. I love the book itself but am unhappy with the copy I got.

I bought this for my wife, who's a huge Joni fan, and she's over the moon about it. Reading some of the reviews on here I hesitated to buy it from Amazon, but trusted their return policy if the book arrived damaged. It came quickly and in mint condition. Dustcover and endboards are of decent quality, about standard or better for this price range.As much as I admire Joni's music and poetry, her artwork in this book blows me away. My only regret is that it covers her early career only, up to 1971 and the issue of her album Blue. A similar volume dealing with her later music, art and poetry would be very welcome.

I’m sure the book itself is a nice read but my first order arrived ripped and dirty (hard to see in the pics but the scuff marks on the sleeve are pretty dark). I sent it back and my replacement was not ripped but DIRTIER. This is for a present so not presentable at all. I imagine Amazon takes poor care of its products - these books must be getting kicked around in a dusty warehouse. Cant be bothered to request another replacement hoping the third book is clean.Ps the sleeve holds the artwork while the hardcover within is plain, so you definitely can’t gift this without the sleeve.
