Hi, Pond newbie here. In the description "Does not include water pump or basin; ..." What does basin mean here? Do I need it on top of this pond?

Thanks for your question. A basin for a water feature is a reservoir to collect water that is typically buried and has a grate on top to allow water to pass through. A pump is placed inside the reservoir that then feeds water up to some sort of decorative water feature that sits on top of the basin, this can be a fountain, a bubbling vase, ect. Customer's sometimes use these patio ponds as a sort of bubbling overflowing vase which is why the listing notates it doesn't include a basin. Sure! But it does have a shelf in it. So you can put some plants on the shelf in the water. It's also very lite, easy to lift and move around.

How to the 40 inch come delivered? Was it protected in a box? I’m worried about damage in shipping.

If I remember it was just packed in a box. It is very sturdy and heavy. I doubt that rough handling will damage it, unless they run it over with the truck! And that’s not likely

does this have a drain valve?

It does not. You have to tip it or use a syphon hose to empty it. That can be a bit inconvenient, but I have to say, I love my little container pond.
