Cold-Weather Cooking

A must have book for anyone who lives in colder climates. Or wishes that they did.
I'm on my second copy of this wonderful book. I bought a paperback copy as a young bride in 1991, and used it to make my first Christmas dinner in our new home in New England. There are so many incredible recipes that I returned to time and time again; so much so that my original copy was almost falling apart. It had numerous stains marking recipes I used the most, and SO many dog-eared pages marking recipes I wanted to try, or needed to remember to make again. I replaced my beloved old paperback copy with this hardcopy version, and handed the tattered paperback edition to my 24 year old daughter (a new bride), who looks forward to cooking all of the holiday foods from her childhood.

My favorite cookbook, hands down.
I love this book. I've been into cooking since I was about 5 and I own over 4,000 cookbooks, but this one is definitely my fav. I bought it in December 1990 and at this point, have cooked nearly every recipe in the book. They are all fabulous. I have never had one of these recipes fail.I have given this book as a gift many times over the years, and the recipients have all come to love the book as much as I do.Here are some of the standout recipes:Creamed Spinach - it's a very simple recipe but the best I've ever tastedMustard Creamed Onions - a zippy twist on a Thanksgiving traditionSpanish Garlic Soup - rich and unusualRaised Waffles - worth the price of the book just for this recipe!Apricot Ginger Cream Scones - totally fattening & totally worth itTurkey Mole - the best mole I've ever had, way better than most restaurantsSpicy Shrimp, NOLA Style - just like Pascal Manale'sThe thing I love about these recipes is that even the ones I don't think I'll like (such as Rhubarb Custard Pie) come out great. SLC also has a fun, chatty and erudite writing style, so reading her cookbooks is almost as much fun as cooking from them. Many of the recipes are a bit long and can take awhile to make, but the end product is worth every minute of prep time.

Not what I had hoped for
Be prepared to cook with a lot of different alcoholic beverages, It seems you need a well-stocked bar for these recipes. Also, the recipes are not very original, but seem to just add a spice or two to an old one to spruce it up. It was very overpriced for what I received and the review I based my purchase on, was overblown. I was disappointed and may not keep this one in my cookbook collection. The book looks nice and the layout is fine, but I buy cookbooks for a fun read and/or great recipes.

For serious cooks
There are lots of interesting and easy recipes in this book. Some are for serious cooks and call for some pretty hard to find ingredients. But I will use this book alot.

My Favorite Cookbook of All Time!
I've had this cookbook on my shelf for almost 20 years. I just bought a copy for my 24 year old daughter. Every time I pull it out and read through the recipes it makes me happy! I'm one of those people who hates winter, the darkness, the cold. If there is anything positive about the winter months it's THIS cookbook! Sarah L. Chase is a master when it comes to blending flavors. You'll enjoy reading her descriptions and how she came up with the recipes just as much as you will preparing and cooking each dish. Enjoy!

Great recipes! Utterly worthless as a cooking tool.
The editor and publisher should be ashamed. This poor woman wrote a great cookbook but you can’t lay it flat to cook from it. You can’t lay it flat on a photocopier to copy a recipe without breaking the spine. How are you supposed to cook from it? Hand copy each recipe from the book? You can’t even hold it open with one hand.Maybe you can get someone else to hold it, take a photo with your phone, and print out the photo. Sorry, too many other cookbooks easier to use.But really, a cookbook is a tool. This one can’t be used.
