Works very well
I've been fixing the propane appliances in my RV and this tool is indispensable for checking my work after putting things back together. It's far more convenient than messing around with soapy water and also more reliable, because you often cannot see the entire fitting you want to check - for instance, if a gas bubble forms on the back side of the fitting being tested, the leak will go undetected - but this tool will "sniff" out the leak regardless. I think it is wonderful that DIY enthusiasts have access to affordable tools like this.

Good tool to own
It helped me connecting gas water heater. Easy to use (I gave it 4 star because the meter takes a bit long to calibrate). Other than that everything works well.

did the job and priced right. tested before fixing leak ( it beeped ).....tested after fixing leak ( it did not beep ). Tested again against stove top to confirm I didn't break the thing ( it beeped ).Did the job! Also, used bubbles to 'double-check' my work.

Just ok.
Doesn't work great but is a low cost way to help detect a large leak. I think the leak would have to be so large you could hear it and smell it before this detector would find it. I needed to find a very small leak and this was basically useless. I had to bring in a plumber to find it.

Waste of my time!
I was skeptical about the mixed reviews but now I know that if it is half negative and half positive assume it is no good!I tried to test it with the stove and could not get this thing to work and I followed the instructions. No matter what I did the light was always green and it beeped but it never showed red or yellow light.

portable gas detector
this item worked very well. the price was excellent. we used it for our RV, and it made us feel much safer knowing there was no leaks.

Does a crucial job nicely!
I have owned several of these in the past and have found them to be very reliable (as long as you don't drop them!). The one drawback is that an eyeglass type screwdriver is required to remove the battery compartment cover. The Detector is easy to test by briefly turning on any gas burner. If your unit doesn't sound an alarm then request a replacement from the seller. They do work!

Portable gas detector
I bought this to check a propane line we ran. I first bubble tested the connections and found no leaks but wanted to double check with this little unit. I did not find any leaks with this either. I first tested per the instructions by using a butane lighter held at a 90 degree angle to the unit and it did set it off. I read that some people put it directly by an unlit, turned on gas burner which the directions tell you NOT to do as that will essentially fry the tool.Since it did sense butane I assume it would sense the other gases it's supposed to. For the price I think it's a handy tool to have on hand.
