Funny, poignant, and delightful
In this day and age of technology, it is absolutely refreshing to read about a country vet in the 1930s tooling about in a rusty Aston Martin and saving animals to the best of his abilities without sophisticated drugs or equipment. The author's voice is so full of humor, warmth, and charm that I read all three books over the course of about a week (which is no easy feat as I also work full time).Herriot's stories show the reader the wonderful springs and the harsh winters of the Yorkshire country which he clearly loves, and introduces various characters (both two- and four-legged) that inhabit this world. His business partner is hilarious, the partner's brother is outrageous, and while there are some hard times in the book, it is easy to see the hope and optimism that the author feels about life - it is thoroughly infused in the entire narrative. There are some memorable characters and relationships portrayed in the book. The business partner who lectures Herriot about the importance of collecting money from the owners of the animals, only to turn around and refuse to collect money from a destitute man who brings his dog for treatment, and the story of the village troublemaker whose short-lived redemption was due to his desire to care for his stray dog - all these stories and more offer glimpses of humanity at its best and the strange bond between humans and animals, whether they are pets or farm animals. The prose is simple and descriptive and leads the reader to imagine the place and the daily life of this country vet. The book made me wish I had been alive in their world and had the fortune to know them personally. This book is simply delightful to read and should be in everyone's Kindle.

A Magnificent Classic
I read all three of these books when they first were published- almost 50 years ago. Touching, fascinating, and absolutely hilarious at times-laugh out loud with stomach hurting and tears running down my face! I remembered some of the scenarios, but most of this was like reading new books, and they were as wonderful as I remembered. I had been recently thinking about them, when I got an e-mail from Amazon inviting me to look into these books, since I am an animal lover. My husband and I recently became parents of a huge, goofy GoldenDoodle after almost 30 years without any pets. I read much of the books with my 80 pound puppy in my lap-made the reading so much more meaningful. Highly recommend this series of extraordinary stories by an extraordinary man.

Enjoyed the reread
I love everything about these books and the author's writing style. I first read these books in the 1970's and I enjoyed them just as much this time. It was like visiting with old friends😊

I Loved Reading These Stories!
I lived for a year in England in a small village and loved it. These three books brought it back to memorylike I was there again. James Herriot has a descriptive style that paints a complete story. I'm reading the biography of the author written by his son next.

Good but Not Great; Enjoyable if Not Earthshaking
I found each of these books a very pleasant read. Together they constitute the majority of Herriot's memoirs. In the 1930's the young James Herriot, upon graduating from Veterinary School, accepts a job in a practice in England's far northern Yorkshire Dales. Coming as he does from a crowded, chaotic, and polluted life in Britain's great manufacturing cities, he is immediately entranced by the purity of the air and the beauty of the landscape in this lightly populated and fairly stark mountainous region. Despite the hideousness of the roads he must drive to get to his patients and the even more awful weather conditions in which he must perform so much of his work, he continues for the rest of his life to find great joy and balm for his soul in this landscape. And Herriot does a wonderful job of making the reader, if not share in his wonder, at least comprehend it.However enjoyable these books were, and they were, "given my druthers" I'd have rated them 3.5 stars rather than 4. They were not quite what I had expected. Different is not necessarily bad; obviously it can be thought provoking, startling, or even wondrous. But I had thought to find stories of his connections to his animal patients. What he offers instead is short portraits of the owners of the animals. He paints his very successful portrait of The Dales through the gradual accretion of brief story on brief story about the people who live (lived) there. All of which leads to my small disappointment in these books. Herriot is so successful in bringing his people to life that time after time I found myself wanting to know more about them, wanting to know what happened to them after the brief episode of the Vet's visit. Herriot, however, very rarely returns to a character about whom he has already written. More problematic in his characterization are those people who do become constants in his life--his partner, his partner's younger brother, and the woman who would eventually become his wife. Obviously he writes about these people multiple times during the course of the books, and what he offers is not character development, but caricatures. His wife is kind and loving, his partner is a good-hearted eccentric, and the brother is a warm-hearted wastrel. Period. End of story. In treating the vast majority of the people in his life so very briefly, Herriot was obviously playing to his writing strengths.Despite my criticism, these books are worth reading. Never was I bored or tempted to stop without finishing them. I think Herriot is a writer of very real, if limited, ability. And aside from my enjoyment of the books, I was glad to have finally read some of his justly famous memoirs.

One of the great literary classics!
For those of us who are animal lovers, James Harriot's books are classics. No matter how often you read them, they are always the best books on the "shelf." When I am depressed or can't sleep I pull up one of these books and then all is right with the world!

難しいけど、面白いです
All Creatures Great and Smallから、始まる3部作をまとめてあり、かなりお得です。獣医さんの話なので単語は難しいですが、文章は読みやすいです。All Creatures Great and Smallは日本では「ヘリオット先生奮戦記」で上下巻で出ているのでまず日本語で読んでおくと良いと思います。イギリスの田舎で起こる話で、面白く、登場人物や動物も魅力的です。ドラマ化もされ、DVDも出ています。Kindleでも特に問題はなく3冊全てに目次があり、簡単に好きな章から読むことが出来ました。

James Herriot
This is at least the 3rd time I've read the original English version of these 3 books. Herriot and his fellow characters are like old friends.
