Great product
When measuring long distances, that product is a must, I will not talk about its features because that can be found in the products details. But what I have to say that you would need a tripod when measuring far distances because any small momvement will take you off your target and it's almost impossible to hold it still without a support.Maximum distance that I have tried was a 100 meter and I have not tried it beyond that yet.In bright sunlight the camera screen is a little difficult to see.

Just short of great
I use the Disto D5 primarily outdoors, which is why I purchased this model. I purchased a set of infrared goggles but the target finder largely eliminates the need for them, which is a good thing. For straight length measurements using the device hand held is easy enough. If you need to use any of the indirect (Pythagorean) modes a tripod is a must, but not a great inconvenience. So far I have not needed a purchased target, I have used a piece of paper taped to the corner. Accuracy is great, if you hit your target. My only complaint is that the tilt sensor should go beyond 45 degrees. The few times I have tried the function it has been a limiting factor.

Great Tool but missing key feature for my current use.
This laser does everything it is supposed to do. I have used a previous Leica laser for more than 10 years and only partially retired it when the laser seems to be less "crisp" than the new one which means that it doesn't work as well in bright sun. This new one is fine but I miss the sight viewing window found in the old one. This D5 has a camera that zooms in well but you can't use the camera with the "add" function so often needed for measuring long buildings. Quality & function are otherwise great.

Horizontal measurement
i have not owned or used a laser distance measuring device before. This device very handy and capable of measuring some things that would have been difficult or impractical with a tape measure, especially if you are alone. i have tested all the measurement function are very accurately and convenience expect the horizontal measurement.it need to have 90 degree angle level to calculate the length of horizontal , for vertical is no problem because the unit it self built in tilt sensor to tell you the sloping degree position.Till now i still can't figure out how to get 90 degree horizontal angle position for the unit to calculate the length. Overall a very handy device that makes a great addition to your toolkit. Please advise if anybody know the way how to measure accurate horizontal length. Thanks in advance.

Just what I needed for outdoors use.
I'm a real estate appraiser and was using the Disto D3. It works pretty well, but bright, sunny days the laser would get washout at medium ranges, less than 40 feet. Upgraded to the Disto D5 a couple of months ago, and it works great for those sunny days. Love the built-in spotting camera, very cool and dead on. Can do hand held measurements out to 60 feet bouncing the laser off a rain gutter. It is challenging pressing the Distos "blister" buttons and keeping the laser on target. The units blister buttons take more pressure than it should, too bad they didn't use buttons like on a TV remote, something a little easier to press. Sort of like a softer trigger pull on a gun. I haven't had the opportunity to learn of use the advanced functions, but I'm sure they work fine.

This gizmo is awesome!
The ultimate in distance measurement. Deadly accurate and easy to use. Video targeting makes this just as useful outdoors as it is indoors. Without the video assist, any laser is virtually useless outdoors except under very low light conditions or short measurement distances. Indoors they are all about even. This will become your favorite tool.

Great replacement for my 1st Generation Disto
Great improvement in size, weight and functionality. It fits easily in my pocket or the downsized holster. Having the zoom makes long or bright shots easier -- never really liked the peep hole. I like the way the last several measurements are stored, a brilliant feature for an appraiser at my age/stage.

Brilliant for garden measurement
It's quite complicated and for garden measurements (plans and plant positions) I am not likely to use all the features but it is so much better and more accurate than using tapes, and with the tilt measurement it can give you the horizontal distance really easily. So far I have managed to measure up to about 70m in bright sunshine. It helps to put up a target (a white envelope pinned/or stuck to the object) and use a tripod for the device (I use a camera tripod). A key limitation on distance under these conditions is viewing the target on the screen, so you may need to shade it. The device is robust for outdoor use and comes with a belt pouch, and battery life is good. The measurement memory is great to avoid mistakes writing down the data. Ideally I would like to measure horizontal angle, if only roughly, to do initial orientation and triangulation (I used my mobile phone compass) but I am very happy as it is. A great buy if you want to measure things outdoors, and so accurate!

Good tool
I bought this on the strength of the screen as I had to measure weir widths and dimensions where spotting a small laser dot at a distance is almost impossible. I recommend it and would also recommend it it used with a tripod if using the screen at x4 to keep it steady. There's a female thread in the back and it fits a regular camera tripod. A very useful tool.
