The story you are about to see is true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.Taking the successful radio program to the new medium of television, Dragnet was famous for its use of actual Los Angeles Police Department case files. Jack Webb portrays Sgt. Joe Friday, who works the dayshift with his partners on a variety of interesting cases. This program was reincarnated in 1967; eight years after its first television series had ended, with Jack Webb reprising his role of Sgt. Joe Friday.Just The Facts, Ma'am!

An awesome detective series
First off, many of the old black and white DRAGNET episodes are public domain so do not expect remastered quality. I would like to say that while the picture quality goes up and down by the episode, the entertainment value is there and the price for what you get is great. Do not delay grabbing this set.

Just the facts, Ma'am. Good DVD set.
Young, skinny Joe Friday. Episodes are all B&W. Fun to spot the young up and coming actors. Spotted Nimoy and Eastwood so far.Not like the hokey 60's version with bad acting. This is gritty and serious with a hint of a character story line.

Great DVD
It was excellent seeing these old reruns again. Very high quality, looked better than when I first saw them back in the 50's.

This is the city, Los Angeles .... I am a cop!
TV shows did not save their programs on the quality of film like expensive movies so it is remarkable that we have this programs that are 70 years old. I love the relationship between Friday and Smith. that carried forward to the 60's with Gannon and Friday. Unlike Highway Patrol, Dragnet mainly deals with post crime detective work by Friday and Smith. The staccato flow of language is part of Dragnet legend. So this 2 disc set contains 16 Episodes many are on other collections. Since Dragnet from the 50's is in the public domain there has never been a definitive collection. Just a hodge podge like this. The sound and video is not the best so it is nice just to have a bit of TV history.

Transfer quality lacking
I only paid $5.50 for this so I can't expect perfection, but the transfer looks like it was done from someone's VCR--occasional fluttering at the top of the picture, and a buzzing sound, the kind of thing that happens when the VCR tracking isn't working too well. Probably not a deal breaker for the price, just be aware.

Dragnet
This is a really good early Police TV show, the stories being drawn from actual Los Angeles Police Department cases prior to 1952 when this set was filmed.Although the scenes and sets are limited, the series relies on good acting to carry off the stories.Really great Detective Drama of the level of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes filmsDo not confuse witht he Film Remake Dragnet which is a parody of this great series

Seminal police series from the early 1950s
Dragnet is one of those iconic series that transcends its low production values with unique and involving use of voice over, and terse dialogue.Based on true stories from the Los Angeles Police Department it has a kind of relentless investigative momentum fitted into the thirty minute time frame.Sure, some of the acting would be unacceptable in a modern series, but this is a case of the whole being far greater than the part.I became completely immersed as the episodes followed each other, finding the stock shots of punched card readers sorting out suspects' great fun, fascinating but arguably controversial is the cigarette advertising retained in the episodes on discs 1 and 6.Highly recommended.
