Life and Thread Hanging Mobile - 50 Inches Plastic - Handmade in Denmark by Flensted

After getting over the price (very high, probably due to typical astronomical Scandinavian export taxes), I am happy I ordered this, as a gift for my baby. It is just what I wanted to fill the open ceiling area in baby's room. It is modern, large, cheerful, and colorful. It looks best hanging a little down from the ceiling, maybe 6-8 inches minimum. We have a 9-foot ceiling in the room where it is hanging and we are average height and can still walk under it, but barely. This is not a cheesy baby mobile but rather a grand piece of kinetic art that can never be outgrown. Yes, it's somewhat delicate. It would not survive a kid throwing things at it -- that would damage the arc wires and dent/scratch the plastic objects and perhaps ruin the balance. It's not meant to be handled. It floats gently and is very interesting to look at -- geometric shapes, bright colors, balance, motion. The red, yellow and blue pieces can be swapped out for 3 alternate pieces in gray (light, medium and dark, provided in the same kit, with spare stoppers to attach them to the wires). There is no substitute for black, which is the largest piece, or the green ball. The packaging states the ball is meant to represent the earth and the black is to represent night (black is opposite the yellow -- the sun). So, other than black and green, you can customize the color scheme. It would have been nice if it came with a simple white plug to attach to the ceiling (seriously, toss that in!), but for us it did not matter, because I tucked the hanging line (like fishing line), anchored by the extra line wrapped around the cardboard square it came on, under the plate on the ceiling, since we don't have a fixture installed there. It takes very little air motion for the mobile to move -- it's always moving, even when the room feels still -- so no need to run a fan or open room vents; just keep the temperature the way you ordinarily would. A ceiling fan on high would probably be too much unless it were far away. With a little care (i.e., leave it alone) it should last a very long time and will never go out of style. A worthwhile investment and it keeps the baby fascinated, and I like to think this is better for the little growing brain than some cheesy cartoon mobile outgrown by age 1. I would also hang this in a modern office or bedroom, so it can grow with her. She'll probably take it to college.

Great work of art. It blends perfectly with my living room theme of mid century pieces. It's quite big, so find a perfect corner for it. It's very well balanced and I like to watch it move slowly around all the time. Great item for the price.

This mobile is exactly what I hoped it would be when I ordered it. I have it hanging in my family room and I smile whenever I look at it. I had been looking for a mobile that was an Alexander Calder reproduction and discovered they are not available. Some digging led me to a NYTimes article dated 8/6/1998 in which Alexander Rower, Calder's grandson said, ''...My grandfather, when he made the work, he never wanted it reproduced."I found this fascinating because Calder's family could have made a killing on selling reproductions of his mobiles and chose to honor and respect the artist's express wishes. What a great tribute to the artist and an amazing example of integrity.That being said, this is not a copy of an Alexander Calder work, however, it has the kinetic movement and bright colors that I so love. It arrives in a beautiful box, with extra pieces in different colors if you wish to change the look.One suggestion if you purchase this item. There are tiny rubber stoppers included with the mobile that are supposed to keep each piece attached, however, when I dusted the mobile, they fell off. I switched out the tiny stoppers and instead used rubber earring backs and the problem was solved.

This mobile is HUGE - the picture doesn't portray the size. It is suited for a large empty corner in a living room or for above a large bed. It is quite interesting. It comes in a small box - be careful when removing. The packing sheets make it look like you have to assemble it - you don't.

We opted for the grey and white thingamabobs instead of the primary color ones. Could not be more happy with the results.

Handsome but wildly overpriced. This is a paper mobile, after all. Attractive product box, if you're giving as a gift.
