Insightful Read
Probably one of the most complete reviews of micro-nutrient deficiency I have ever read. I really appreciated that they started with depleted soils as the first cause of deficiency in our diet. As a grower I find it encouraging to realize that someone other than an agriculturalist is making this observation. It encourages me to continue the practice of amending the soil to improve soil health and maybe - with time, one can come closer to supplying the Optimal Daily Dose for vitamins and micro-nutrients thru our diet. I also appreciated the information about the many different ways that micro-nutrients can be depleted in our food from the farm to the fork and by our lifestyles. The information on vitamin and mineral competition and synergy was interesting but I think could have been presented in a clearer manner. The diagrams related to competition and synergy were really just a blur of lines. A possible consideration for future editions might be a series of overlays so that one could look at the relationships in smaller numbers instead of all at once.Highly recommend this book for health care providers, dieters, growers and those that are curious or concerned about how food and diet relate to our health. This book would certainly suggest that if there is a problem with your health that you should ask your doctor whether vitamin and mineral deficiency might be one of the first things to be looking at.

A Nutrional Must Read - Modern Day Weston A. Price!
This is the first book in their series of books on how to obtain an optimal life. Very well written, researched and very engaging, it belongs in the library of anyone interested in health. It chronicles their journey around the world examining how different societies deal with food and the subsequent glaring micronutrient deficiencies. Their research brought them to the conclusion that modern living is intricately related to the diseases of civilization and that even the most carefully planned diet is still likely micronutrient deficient due to forces outside of our control. Yes, they do have a product to sell, but that is merely the result of years of research and there not being an adequate supplement already on the market. Their upcoming book Rich Food, Poor Food deals with common issues one encounters when shopping for groceries, yet they are not releasing a line of food products. Do not let the detractors discourage you from reading an essential book regarding micronutient sufficiency.

Answer to Prayer
Naked Calories has been an answer to prayer. I've found this book to be very practical as I have started to apply what I am learning about micro-nutrients. I have been very rough on my hands in my life and thought there was no hope for being able to live pain free. I was scheduled to have surgery on my left thumb because I thought there was no other alternative. During an interview I heard, Mira described a similar prognosis and immediately, I felt a connection. The next day, I canceled the surgery on my thumb and ordered Naked Calories. So far, I have increased the amount of quality Omega-3 I am taking and have decreased greatly my Omega-6 intake. The pain in my hands is almost completely gone. In fact, I pulled out my 5 iron and took a few swings with it for the first time in 2 years. I'm excited to get deeper into the book. I know I've only scratched the surface... Thank You Caltons!!!

Torn
I found this book to be very insightful, and their research is very well carried out. However, I was disappointed to find that the entire book is based around selling the reader their new form of vitamin, though they never mention this directly. The end of the book simple directs the reader the author's website to discover what vitamins on the market may meet all the requirements they discussed in the book. The formula is, of course, distributed and sold by the authors - which leaves me desiring some third party evaluations.I would feel better about this had they clearly stated in the beginning that their goal WAS, in fact, to introduce the reader to a "ground-breaking" new vitamin

One of the most important contributions to the art of staying healthy
Back in the 1930s an American dentist, Weston A Price, wondered why Americans had such bad teeth and wondered if it had anything to do with their diet. He set off on a world tour looking at primitive tribes who had had little or no contact with the west, tribes where some of them were still living in traditional ways but some had started to eat western food, and people who were 100% westernised. His work was seminal; he showed, even back in the 1930s, that our western diet was not as healthy as we had supposed. In the 21st century, medical doctor and nutritionist Jayston Calton and his wife Mira set off on a similar oddysey. The toured over 100 countries over 6 years, and foudn that things had got worse instead of better since Weston Price's time.If you are interested in nutrition you are no doubt aware of the "macro-nutrient wars": should we eat low fat and high carb, or high fat and low carb? The wars rage. But few people pay any attention to micro-nutrients: vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and the like. About the only mild controversy is whether you will get sufficient if you eat your five a day. Well, the Calton's show, very convincingly, that you won't.There are criticisms of the book that they a) don't mention their own supplement, Nutrience, but when advising how to chose a supplement their criteria lead only to theirs. Well, it's true that that's how the book is, but I won't criticise them for that. Having done a huge amount of research they have come to a number of conclusions about what micro-nutrients we need to supplment, the quantities, the quality, how to deliver those micro-nutrients for the best absorption, the frequency of delivery, and what nutrients go together and support one another and which ones interfere with one another and block their effect. Seeing that there was no supplement on the market that fulfilled all of these criteria, they went ahead and made one (and I am taking it, and it seems fine to me). They didn't want to push their own product in their book; presumably they want you to get the message without feeling "sold to". Well, I would say fooey to that! Read the book, get the message, then get and read Rich Food Poor Food and get that message, and then get the supplements. If you are American you'll probably save what you spend on Nutrience in doctors and pharmacy bills. And if you live somewhere where you don't pay for health care, you'll just be healthier, happier, and be saving the health-care system (and hence yourself as a tax payer) money.

research based applied to practice, very good
took a bit of reading & digesting of information, nutritional knowledge & application has advanced so much over the past decade or two. Made me think about past eating beliefs & what would be beneficial to me today. Good application of theory, research & practicalities.
