John Petrucci Rock Discipline

Will increase your skill & knowledge as a guitar player
If you are a beginning to intermediate guitar player, this will definitely help. If buying used, try to find one that has the tablature booklet included. When I was shopping for this, the third or fourth down the list actually said it included the book, so that's the one I bought, it was a couple dollars more, but to me it was worth it. I would be totally lost without having the book as a reference. I knew who John Petrucci was, mostly due to seeing his guitars in all the catalogs, but I was unfamiliar with him as a player ~ didn't like or dislike him, just didn't really know. After this video, I can say I like him and will be checking out his music. A guitar playing friend turned me on to this DVD and I am glad he did. In just a few days, my level of playing and confidence has gone way up. I have a whole new bag of tricks. I would say this is definitely worth while, even if you don't particularly like his style of music because the things he teaches can be used playing any style. In short, I would recommend this DVD highly. It has gotten daily use since it arrived, and I find myself looking forward to tomorrow's practice to see what has become subconscious and how much faster I can play than even yesterday. It's scary to think where I might be in a year, playing things I always thought impossible. Thanks to John Petrucci for putting in the time and effort to make this DVD and sharing really useful information.

Inspired and astonishing
I bought this never having heard the name or the work of John Petrucci. Wow. What a combination... he is a quiet, friendly guy with astonishing skill and speed. He shows you what's possible, and how it's done.Once you see this guy play, there are 3 possibilities: 1.) You'll see how good you could become, and use his advice to move in that direction; 2.) You'll see how good you could become, ignore it and go back to doing whatever it was you were doing before; 3.) You'll realize the futility of the situation, give up, and burn your guitar! If you've been playing a while, and you've never gotten past the basics, you should look at this DVD and see what is beyond. Even if you don't make it there, using even one or two techniques John shows will probably improve your playing.

how to move your hands
This is not,'how to play like me', (although aspects of that are always impossible to remove entirely), or even how to play any particular style of music, but 'how to successfully move your hands on a guitar'. This is a valuable approach for beginners, who might otherwise be overwhelmed, _and_ for experienced players who don't -want- to told what to play, just how to do what they do already, but better. The single line, arpeggio, and sweep-picking sections are much more elaborate than the fairly simple chordal segment, and for those who -do- want to sound like JP, a thorough covering of his equipment at the end. I've never seen the tape version, but the DVD is the most professionally produced instructional videos , on _any_ topic, that I've seen.

Very worthwhile
I have been playing guitar for 22 years. I am classically trained and have both played professionally and taught music. If you are even remotely thinking of purchasing this DVD, DO IT! The only thing is the booklet is in print form but I made a HD scan of it. If you have purchased the DVD and would like a PDF copy of my scan email me at [email protected] please note that the PDF booklet will for you no good without the DVD.

Worth every penny!
First I should mention that I am new to learning the guitar and have purchased several "learn guitar at home" items. All of them have their positive points, but none of them cover the technique of stretching and warm ups like Petrucci. I have seen an increase in my strength and the ability to reach farther on the fretboard in just 2 weeks of owning his DVD. I highly recommend this to any "newbie" out there.

I like the way he starts out with body warm ups
Been waiting a while to get this one. Perhaps if I can add a 6th finger to my left hand and another 54 years to my life, I will approach some level of mastery. I like the way he starts out with body warm ups, often neglected by many guitarists. Worth the money.

John Petrucci: Rock Discipline
This DVD was refferred to me by an outstanding guitarist from The Human Abstract. I havent gone through the whole DVD but for starters the warm up excersises are very good for stretching and loosening your fingers... You are able to play with this DVD and know what he is doing because it gets close to his fingers and slows it down for begginer guitar players such as myself.

A DVD for life
Superb, this is not a watch-it-once-and-then-put-it-on-the-shelf kind of DVD, but the sort you can come back to again and again for years. The warm-ups alone will - if you stick with them with a metronome, as demonstrated! - will get your fingers moving nicely, and although you won't necessarily be as musical as Mister Petrucci - no DVD can teach you that - you WILL come out the other side a much more fluid and confident player.

Great speed Techniques!
Speed, dexterity and accuracy is what this DVD is all about. But also more advanced chord techniques to spice up your sometimes boring chords that we hear all the time.
