cute book for a younger reader
This is a sweet book, perfect as a light diversion for young girls who read above their grade level, particularly if that girl has a thing for ponies. If I was grading this as high-quality literature, it would get far fewer stars, but my daughter loved it enough that I just had to bump it to four. The content is appropriate for a kid as young as six or so, but at over 300 pages it's pretty long, which will satisfy a precocious reader who is capable of reading longer books but not yet ready for more mature content. That said, it's probably not going to be a great fit for an older kid, and certainly not for adults. The plot is implausible to the point of goofiness, and there are many attempts at slap-stick that didn't work for me -- but did work for my seven-year-old daughter, which is what matters. She fell in love with Sancho the pony and kept a running chant of, "I hope she keeps Sancho, I hope she keeps Sancho!" from start to finish. I should probably mention that there is also some serious content: the main character is haunted by guilt over a fire that killed her pony's mother, for example, and the subject of divorce and estrangement come up as well, and of course the entire plot is built around the family's financial struggles. My daughter was tearing in a couple places for sure. But for the main part this is a mad-cap adventure story and it's a good little romp that will have your little one cheering and giggling in turns.ADDED 3/5/2014: I just had to edit to say that this is *still* my daughter's #1 favorite book in the world. I don't mean that casually -- I mean it as in "completely obsessed." She carries it everywhere she goes, even to school. Today, no joke, her teacher is letting her give a presentation to her class, titled "You MUST read this book because it is the BEST BOOK in the whole world!!!" If she could give it stars, she'd give it 10+.This will forever be, for my daughter, the book that made her fall in love with reading. For that I must send out a tremendous THANK YOU to the author, and upgrade my review to highly and without hesitation recommend this book to other 6-9 year old girls.
