Jazz Icons: Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers Live in '58

Pure Magic!
I cannot count the times I've listened to Moanin' (The Rudy Van Gelder Edition) , wishing that I could have been at that session. My reasons are the line-up, and especially Lee Morgan paired with Benny Golson. And, of course, Art Blakey, Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt holding down the rhythm section on drums, piano and bass. It was a dream line-up and a short-lived one. This video does the next best thing - captures that same line-up in a live performance. In fact, being there - even via a video - at a live performance would easily satisfy my wish as a fan.My favorite segment on this video is Lee Morgan playing Benny Golson's I Remember Clifford. To me that was a musical and emotional high point. Of course, Bobby Timmons playing his own composition, Moanin', and Merritt's bass solo caught my attention. That segment lasted fifteen minutes and everyone contributed to it being a masterpiece. No Jazz Messenger performance would be complete without Night in Tunisia. Blakey was absolutely explosive.Let me preface that this is am amazing video that will please any fan or jazz musician. Now for the quibbles: there is no scene indexing on this DVD. You have one option: play. I can live with that because the booklet that comes with this video far exceeded my expectations for being informative. It, alone, is almost worth the price of the DVD. I was so into this performance that I was disappointed that it ended after only 55 minutes. On the other hand, 55 minutes of Jazz Messenger playing is like triple that of any other ensemble because Blakey's energy and drive spurred on any line-up and pushed them to their limits. In the case of this particular line-up, they put their hearts and soul into it - and it shows.

This 1958 concert is beautifully filmed, with excellent audio
This 1958 concert is beautifully filmed, with excellent audio. The Europeans have great respect for American jazz, which is evident from the quality of this video. You literally feel like you are in the audience, seeing this legendary band live.Everyone in the band performs at the top of his ability, but Lee Morgan is exceptional. This man was only 20 years old at the time of this concert, and he absolutely kills. His technique, his concept, his melodic ideas--He is truly stunning. What a tragedy that we lost him at the age of 34.Drummers will enjoy watching Blakey's moves. The man was one of a kind, with inerrant time, a hard, swinging groove that no other drummer has been able to replicate, and impressive technique.A must see for Jazz Messenger fans!

Awesome - Do yourself a favor - GET THIS DVD!
Short review here...get this DVD. It's awesome. Great musical set. My favorite part was at the very end when their trading solos: Benny Golson finishes this commandingly difficult and beautiful cadence to Night In Tunisia, and then Art Blakey finishes it off with his drum work -- while Art stands and begins (with taste) banging away on the cymbal, which slowly lowers and lowers down on the stand until the stand height is entirely lowered down...doesn't skip a beat. He beat the thing down and kept going. Really cool to see this stuff rather than just hear it. And, Lee Morgan is the most under-rated, under-appreciated jazz trumpeter. He is absolutely incredible. Probably my favorite now, and it was a treat to see him in action.Get this DVD, you will not be sorry.

Blakey's Best!
Wow, how do I begin to tell you how great this video is? It's like actually being there at this 1958 performance! Actually, it's better than being there because the close ups shots of the band members while performing are just amazing! And the performance is a dream come true! Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, Bobby Timmons, and Jymie Merrit are all in top form, not to mention Blakey, who's manic performance nearly collaspes a cymbal stand during the incredibly hot final solo! Morgan's beautiful playing on "I Remember Clifford" is one of the best performances by anyone of the ballad. In addition, Blakey's between song comments are quite entertaining as well. If you love jazz you have got to get this DVD!

Nirvana!
This edition of the Jazz Messengers only lasted about six months, but it was one of the best, featuring the emerging great talent of Lee Morgan, Benny Golson approaching his prime, and the inimitable Bobby Timmons. They were in top form for this 1958 concert in Belgium. You will savor every moment of this 58-minute DVD, and wish it was twice as long. The sound quality is superb, and the video's not bad either.

Jazz Messengers Live in '58
A stunning discovery in Belgian archives of a concert in Brussels in 1958 with the famous line-up with Benny Golson (tenor) and Lee Morgan (trumpet) that lasted only 6 months. Benny Golson's now famous compositions like 'I Remember Clifford' and Whisper Not' are still fresh, and it is incredible to actually see 20-years old Lee Morgan and hear how mature his playing was. The only visual document of a live performance of a legendary group. And excellent quality!

Jazz Classic
Jazz fans don't miss this concert from 1958. Benny Golson was at the top of his game. Lee Morgan at 20 was amazing. This concert was a preview of his bright but short future. One of the better configurations of the Jazz Messengers( until Wayne Shorter showed up!).

An Important Message
This was without doubt the best band of musicians and composers - Bobby Timmons and Benny Golson- that Art Blakey ever assembled. The quality of this disc, both in terms of picture and sound is excellent. It gives a true idea of what modern jazz is missing today.
