Flowers Are Calling

Kenard Pak's illustrations are just beautiful! The story has an odd flow though..
Kenard Pak is a favorite illustrator of ours. His books were the first to really get my daughter interested in story books. One review mentioned there's a lot of text for younger kids, but I think it depends on the individual child. My daughter is almost 2.5yo and loves long story books (like We're the Gardeners). I don't think this books text will be an issue for her.Another review mentioned it was sort of confusing to read as they've intermingled animals who pollinate vs ones that don't, and the way it's worded throughout the book is strange. I agree with the other reviewer in the approach of something like "Oh look, a family of rabbits are hopping through patches of violets! Do rabbits help to pollinate violets? No, but there's also bee flies flying around the violets to pollinate them. " Basically, I'll be re-writing the book so it flows a little better for when I read it to my daughter.

I wanted to love this book!
However, as a review mentioned above, there are pages of this book which are very difficult to read without a bright light. Kenard Pak is one of our favorite illustrators, and the illustrations are lovely. I am not sure with whom the problem lies. The illustrations are beautiful when backlit by a device like an iPad, but often fall too flat on a printed page, and as a result, some of the illustrations are difficult to see without the assistance of bright light. If you are reading it on a brightly lit sunny day, I’m sure it is fine. On a dreary day in Ohio, we need a reading lamp to truly see the beauty in this book. In spite of the struggle, I’m sure we will read it again and again for the playful, informative text and flower reference pages. EDIT: I initially had only three stars for this book, but decided it is worth four!

Beautiful book about pollinators
Flowers Are Calling is a beautifully illustrated book about different kinds of pollinators. It's simple enough for young children to understand, and it shows that not just bees have a relationship with flowers!I have always admired Kenard Pak's artwork, and Rita Gray's simple rhyming text makes this a gorgeous book to read to little ones. My 2 year old loves to sit and listen to this book.

Stunning art work, lovely message for people of all ages
I was urged to look at getting this book by a fellow rose grower who knew I grow old garden, "bee-o-philic" roses. It is just a wonderful combination of artistry and thought. What I love most about it is how universal the appeal is; a pre-verbal child can enjoy this as much as any adult. It is a rare joy to see a work this lovingly crafted with such wide audience draw. You won't regret owning "Flowers Are Calling".

Really cute book. Bought it for grandson as he LOVES flowers. A little too advanced for someone under 16 months, but he has become more interested recently (19 months).
