Pleased with range covered in a 164-page volume.
So far, I've noted it seems well done. There is some history behind American fireplaces and hearths. Then it goes into equipment and utensils of the time, and what modern items you can use in their place. There is also a resource list in the back, should you wish to pursue obtaining replica items. Please note: if you're looking for solely a cookbook, you may be disappointed in this volume. It goes into history, techniques, utensils, safety, and resources (for supplies and education); recipes are only in one chapter. But I'm pleased with it and think it was a good choice as a gift for someone interested in getting started with this form of cooking.

A perfect guide to antique cooking
Every October, I spend a week hosting at a historic home with a big walk in fireplace and lots of antique cooking utensils. This is a great guide.

NOTHING Better Than Hearth Cooking!
Yum, Yum! There is NOTHING better than hearth cooked food in a cast iron pot. Indoors or out, hearth cooking produces high quality food which is worth the effort. Trust me, I know! This book is an easy to read dive into the topic of how to cook over an open fire. Although it may seem silly, most people don't know how to do this. These Boston based authors (meaning this book also applies to you urbanites) researched the topic in depth then compiled it here for a gentle read. It makes it easy to try for yourself. If you or someone you know want's a cooking challenge, then get this book! You will not regret it.

You wouldn't know it's been revised.
Considering the topic, which should be timeless, the contents of this book are rather out of date. Much of the "how to" information is helpful, but there is no added safety advice on those techniques we now know are potentially unsafe. Furthermore, amidst legitimate folklore, the authors manage to perpetuate numerous myths about historic cooking and the culture surrounding it. There are better sources available, written by culinary archaeologists & historians.

Educational
Definitely educational, however the book is a little bit outdated. Many of the items that are ancestors used, would cost a person an arm and a leg, to custom make those things today. However, this book does give you great insight on how it was done "in the old days," and tips on how you can do it at home. A good resource, and if a SHTF scenario arises, and you have a fireplace, this book will be an invaluable resource.

Great book for our times
Lets face it, we do not live in Colonial America any more. Most of us have a pre-fab fireplace or a much smaller brick one. This books gives great ideas on cooking in both a large fireplace and a small one. It is full of wonderful advise. I like the book and it has helped figuring out how to use my fireplace at home. I highly recommend it.
