ENKAY - 10" Extra Thick Loose Cotton Buffing Wheel (80 Ply)

This is the solution I've been needing for guitar finishing. I've been doing all of my polishing work using a dual action orbital polisher with 6" velcro pads. It works, but it tears the pads up easily, slings compound everywhere, and vibrates the heck out of my hands. And it takes quite a bit of time and effort, depending on the finish. Lacquer polishes up pretty quick and easy, but poly can be a bit more stubborn. So here's what I did. I went to my local hardware store and got a couple of 5/8" arbors (threaded shank is 1.5" long) with the adapter washers for 7/8" wheels like this one. I put the wheel on the arbor and tightened the nut. It centered perfectly and I was able to get plenty of extra turns on the nut to make sure it wouldn't slip while in use. I chucked it up in my benchtop drill press and set the motor speed to roughly 1,100 rpm. It works phenomenally well! You have to keep your piece moving so as not to burn through, but that's standard practice even with the professional, craft specific buffers. Now I just need to order two or three more of these so I can dedicate one to each grit of compound. Polishing takes less than half the time and effort of a DA polisher. These wheels are highly recommended. Just keep an eye on your drill press motor and give it time to rest so you don't burn it up. Those motors aren't designed for buffing. And if you do burn it up, don't blame me. I told you they weren't made for that.

The wheel is extra soft and big enough to buff a guitar with a poor man's setup using a slow speed bench grinder.
