Students who purchase this book with the hopes of being better prepared for the exam may find themselves blindsided when ...
This book is misaligned to the AP Music Theory curriculum as presented by College Board. I have contacted the publisher and made them aware that there are egregious errors within the text and that the format of the text does not help to prepare students for the AP exam. Students who purchase this book with the hopes of being better prepared for the exam may find themselves blindsided when they actually take the test. I have been teaching this curriculum for many years and know the exam well-- this text is a good resource for a music appreciation class but largely misses the mark for the AP Music Theory exam. There are no music related examples in the text-- just paragraph after paragraph of music as a general topic. Too little emphasis on music theory-- way too much on music history, instruments, non-Western styles, etc. Please do not purchase. I would send mine back if possible.

Content is NOT based on the AP Music Theory test
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK TO USE WITH YOUR AP MUSIC THEORY CLASS. I was excited to see that there was some additional publications for the AP Music Theory curriculum. I just received the book and I am very disappointed. It is clear that the publishers are not even aware of what it covered in the AP Music Theory examination. THERE IS NOT ONE SINGLE EXAMPLE OF NOTATED MUSIC IN THE ENTIRE BOOK! The book is all SHORT paragraphs covering a variety of music related topics. Here are a few of the topics they include as "Secrets" of the AP Music Theory Exam: History of Singing, Electo- Acoustic music, computers in music, conductors, orchestra seating, Psychology and music, Early childhood education and music, Bruner's 4 features of learning, The Mozart Effect, Music Educators role, Involvement of Parents, Introducing music to children, teaching songs to children, Special needs children, Staffing requirements for grade level teaching, and the last quarter of the book is all music history. HAVE THEY EVER EVEN SEEN AN AP MUSIC THEORY TEST? How can they call this a Study Guide for the test. Very misleading title. Blatant false advertising if you ask me. By the way don't buy their flash cards either for the same reason. I have taught the AP Music Theory course with much success for over 15 years and I have never seen anything like this. It could really put some students off track in their preparation for the exam.
