Abuse of Weakness

Difficult, but compelling
This film is not perfect, but I don't think Catherine Breillat does perfect. She creates films that show you the gritty reality of people, biology, and relationships. The main character does a lot of things that don't make sense, but from my understanding of life, this is quite accurate. You are not given a logical plot tied up neatly in a bow. You are left empty and hanging, but that immediately causes you to seek examples and moments from your own life, and your observations of the lives of others, to create a sense of empathy with the nonsense the main character creates for herself, in the face of a random and "unfair" health problem. The way people become fragile in the face of loneliness, death, disability, and disappointing family ties is starkly revealed in this film. Thus, it is hard to watch, but at the same time makes you feel for people who go through such things, and at the same time have compassion for yourself, and the mistakes you make in very human moments of weakness and vulnerability. We are all open to abuse when we are vulnerable. Usually there is no window on those moments. This movie provides one.

Amazon instant service sound synch problem
This review is not for the film, which I have not yet seen. This review is for my purchase of this movie through the Amazon instant purchase film service. The movie's sound is badly out of synch. It is subtitled, not dubbed.I cannot express how annoying it is to have just paid $15 and not be able to watch because it's so discombobulated.Don't even know who to complain to.

Odd and unconvincing- yet it's based on fact!
Despite featuring the greatest screen actress of the day an odd autobiographical study that completely fails to show why Ms Breillat was so gullible.
