Great information if you get pass the tone
I am the parent of a 4 year old girl. We started Suzuki piano together about 5 months ago and, like any 4 year old, her enthusiasm levels are like a roller coaster. I was looking for some additional guidance on things i could do to keep our home lessons up beat, limit the frustrations, and, of course, motivate my daughter and help her when she gets hung up on something.I read Suzuki's book and was looking for more and was surprised by how little is readily available. This book offers tips on all of the things I was looking for. Initially, the tone of the writing came off negative and made me feel like I was doing everything wrong! As i continued reading, I realized the writers had excellent background, spoke to their own experiences and frustrations and no parent is perfect. They relayed common issues that parents/home teachers can face -- including a child who doesn't want to practice -- i thought that was only my problem!I would recommend this book to any parent either considering Suzuki method or in the middle of it.

Wonderful
The William and Constance Starr's book is written by two professional musicians, Suzuki teachers and Suzuki parents of 8. It is based on the extensive personal experience and close interaction with Shinichi Suzuki while living in Japan and by hosting him at their house in the US. The book's main themes are the practice of teaching children music using Suzuki method and topics relevant to raising children in general, each taking roughly a half of the book. The narrative is both inspirational and practical, while the chapters are to the point: a statement is made and illustrated by a real life example. The book is certainly an invaluable companion for a Suzuki parent with advises ranging from choosing a teacher and supervision of practice to child's participation in orchestras. But it also should appeal to any parent who feels that raising children is one of his top priorities: nurturing a positive self-image with a "yes, I can" attitude, importance of tradition, woes of sibling rivalry and significance of correct diet are some of the issues that the book tackles.I would recommend this book to any parent.

So glad to have it
My son has been in Suzuki violin school for one year. I recently bought this book and read a page or more each day. Various topics are introduced and then talked about by Mr. or Mrs. Starr, and/or by a parent of another violinist or pianist). I often feel relief after reading, knowing then that a problem isn't really a problem, just a normal part of the child's development or skill development that can resolve with love, patience, creativity! Inspiration and joy of teaching throughout. Lots of parent anectdotes. I am inspired by this book and can highly recommend.

A great read for Suzuki parents and teachers
As an elementary school teacher, I found many of the authors' suggestions had practical applications in my own classroom. Reading this book reminded me that it is necessary to repeat new material frequently, until it becomes automatic. As a mom to a new Suzuki violin student, I appreciated the suggestions for parents and ideas for how to keep home lessons fun. I am so glad that I ordered this at the beginning of my daughter's Suzuki journey!

This book was interesting.
It explains how the mother tongue method works.all the pieces I learnt as a child I still remember. And although I could not play the violin those tunes are still in my head. A good teacher is vital to inspire any child. I agree with the authors on this. I also feel that playing music is important in this busy world.
