What’s Up With The Fit and Sizing PEARL iZUMi?
Reading the reviews that others have posted about sizing and running small is a massive understatement.FITI bought five pairs of PEARL iZUMi riding shorts between 2017 and 2018, four of which are Escape Sugar shorts, all of which have consistent sizing and fit like a glove. The 2019 Escape Sugar shorts are not anywhere near the sizing that PEARL iZUMi previously had. It is apparent that PEARL iZUMi must be using a different vendor to make their clothing which is resulting in a massive oversight of quality control. It’s like the company that is manufacturing the clothing is using a child’s template and not using the dimensions that PEARL iZUMi provided them, then again, PEARL iZUMi should be doing quality control checks.SIZINGIn this order I sized up two sizes because of the other reviews. I bought a Large and X-Large. The Large was so small I could barely pull them up to me knees. I was able to pull the X-Large up, but it had an odd fit in the rear because of the padding. As an avid cyclist who puts well over 1,000-miles a year riding trails, I know how a cycling shorts should fit, snug to keep the padding in place so it does not chafe, but not so tight it overly constricts. Now, triathlon appeal tends to fit really snug, but this is not triathlon appeal by any means, and if it were, it would be waaaay too tight.UPDATEOn my initial review, I purchased two sizes (Large and X-Large) because everyone was stating these shorts run incredible small, which they do. I also experienced an issue with the padding, specifically in the seat area. As I mentioned the geometry was messed up. Well, I ordered another X-Large (two sizes up) just to see if this was a one-off issue and it turns out, it was a one-off issue. I attribute this to the change in either manufacturing vendor, quality control, or both. Now, the X-Large is a little snug, but I figure I ride enough that there will be some stretching and if I went up to an XX-Large, it would be huge… To help, I have an athletic build (In extremely good shape from all my riding) at 5’-8” and 160lbs.CONCLUSIONThe shorts are made well regarding stitching and materials but run incredibly small. If you’re a Prime member, try two sizes up and see which is better for you and return the one that does not work. At least you will know what works moving forward, at least until PEARL iZUMi makes changes… I gave four stars because these do not fit like a glove like my previous PEARL iZUMi shorts.

Not the same old Escape Sugar Shorts
I have been buying Pearl iZUMi Escape Sugar Shorts for many years and have always purchased a size Medium and they fit perfectly. I am 5'6" and 130 pounds. So without reading any reviews. and after checking the size chart I purchased the same size of the 2018 version of the shorts. When they arrived they where extra small in size but marked Medium. My 12 year old daughter who weighs 78 pounds and has a small waist found them to be perfect for her. I recommend sizing up one size for a snug fit and two sizes for a normal fit.

Roll up! Prepare to make frequent midride “corrections”
I really wanted to like these. I loved them for the first wear but after washing one time it was downhill from there. They constantly roll up when I’m biking! As a newbie cyclist I didn’t appreciate how short these are relative to more typical cyclist shorts. Im giving up all shorts now and going for 3/4 tights! Now no worries and no midride “corrections.” My tights have the same chamois lining, which seems to work better for me than a couple more expensive Pearl Izumi liners.I’m a size 10-12 in jeans and pants (think Loft, Ann Taylor) and XL fits me perfectly tight. You want these tight tight or you’re on your way to friction/rub town and if you’ve ever had a true saddle sore, you’ll ditch all poor fitting bottoms, not wear undies with your chamois, buy chamois butter, clean yourselfbefore and after, and keep it dry all the time - and obviously wash after EVERY wear. If you’re getting into cycling, do yourself a favor and get the right short/tight/bib fit and research how to prevent and care for saddle sores. I recommend you DO NOT use these shorts, but maybe a smaller body frame doesn’t have the same leg rolling issues as me. 2 stars because good quality, good chamois liner, just hate shorts that roll up!

XL vs L, wear size 10 and 12
Normally I wear in shorts and pants mostly a size 10, sometimes a 12, depending on the cut. I tried on these bike shorts in both XL and L. Both were wearable. The large shorts fit better in the chamois area, with absolutely no movement, but the fabric overall felt tight. I think it would be hot and uncomfortable on a long hot ride. The xl shorts were fine in the chamois area, especially if I pulled them up a bit and made sure the padding was in place. The overall shorts fit a little better. I bought the xl. Keep in mind I tried these on with underwear, and when you actually ride your skin is supposed to be in contact with the chamois. I used to think my husband was nuts for doing this, but I have learned this is preferred, and it really does feel better. Go figure. My old pair of bike shorts were Pearl Izumi with a longer inseam, and I like the feel riding of the shorter inseam. The wide waistband is nicer too. I would have given it 5 stars if these bike shorts made me look slimmer, but unfortunately no magic.

Not bad, but not as comfy as some
So I usually wear a medium in LG shorts. I bought this pair since the shorter LG inseam isn’t available on Amazon right now. The shorts seem smaller than some mediums, and they also fit just fine. These aren’t bad shorts, but I find the LG to be much more comfortable in the pad. I don’t have trouble with these moving or riding up in the legs at all. I would wear the LG short over this one for 100k ride for sure. The thing is these are a little cooler than LG’s thick material. I appreciate the shorter length shorts. I’m 5ft tall. I’ll defiantly get my money’s worth out of them. Not sure if I’ll buy another pair though. I just bought several pair tri shorts, and next time I purchase I’ll probably replace my LG short for the longest rides.

Brilliant!
Love these shorts. I'm not a fan of shorts that go right to the knee - these land right at mid-thigh. Do not ride up while riding, and the chamois is of good quality. This is the second pair I've ordered.
