I bought this so that I can practice my calligraphy without wasting ink or paper. The best part is that it's portable and I can use it almost anywhere. All I need it done water and I can practice calligraphy. Of course, I take care to not saturate the mats with too much water, as this reduces the longevity of the cloth. Occasionally, I have someone notice that I'm using these mate and they get curious. Inadvertently, it also works as a neat conversation piece, and motivates me to practice and improve my craft.

It has silhouettes for the basic strokes, and some basic characters. This is precisely what we’re studying in our calligraphy class.

I bought these for my Classical Chinese students to practice character writing with a brush. I liked the different variety of exercises and the fact that there was also a one for free style practice. I just wish there was a traditional character option.

easy to use, arrived in mint condition and tremendously helpful for learning brush calligraphy. we have brushes but will try these. contacted the company and was informed that the product is non-toxic cloth with a silica top coating. so can play until the heart is content.

Thus far, these are may favorite practice mats. The characters turn black when painted with water l, and dry in minutes!! It's a genius way to practice, especially for people who are new to the art and Chinese character writing. I'd highly recommend these to any beginner/novice in need of practice without wasting good paper in the process.

I think the paper could be better… it doesn’t dry clean… the water bleeds a lot so if you’re writing and want to take a look at a sentence you’ve written, the first characters you wrote are no longer legible. My kids have the Melissa and Doug water-ink for children, a similar concept to this, and this doesn’t happen. In order for the bleeding not to happen, you have to remove almost all the water from the brush tip - which makes writing a lot less enjoyable as the brush is now practically dry and scratching the paper. Another issue I have is that the paper came with some grey/black marks on them. I’m guessing it was signs of wear or tear, probably during shipping - these don’t make the paper unusable but does make the calligraphy less attractive.However, it does what it says. Write with water, eventually it will dry.

This is basically like those kids coloring books that use water. It looks and feels like a real calligraphy set minus the ink or ink stones.Perfect for a newcomer to the hobby like me!

I’ve tried several versions of these mats in Chinese class, and found this one to be one of my favorites. It is thinner and less plasticky than other mats (which makes me wonder about the long-term durability) and reminds me of rice paper. As long as the amount of water is controlled on the brush, I haven’t had too much of an issue with bleeding. As expected, the brush and water dish are both cheaply made but usable. The main draw in ordering this was for the mats, which I use a different (better quality) brush for. My biggest complaints in terms of quality (which I removed a star for) are a fold down the middle (that hopefully can be straightened out over time), some wrinkling around the mat edges, and several permanent small dark spots on the mat writing surfaces.
