These bulbs made my home more livable.
I purchased eight of these light bulbs to use in recessed flood lights in two rooms. Each room has four recessed lights, and I love the light they provide. I live in a new LEED-certified town home that came with compact fluorescents throughout the house. In the living room and the loft, the overhead lighting was often too harsh or too bright when watching television at night. I purchased dimmer switches but found that the bulbs were not dimmable. I tried dimmable fluorescents, but they buzzed loudly and proved untenable for us. These LEDs work perfectly, and there is NO humming anywhere in the dimming range. The dimming range stretches from very muted to full brightness with subtle increments between the two extremes. We really appreciate that these light bulbs don't need to warm up. You flick the switch, and after a nearly-imperceptible delay, the lights are at full power. You don't have to wait for a minute or two as you do for most fluorescents. The delay with the LEDs was initially a strange feature, but it's a fraction of a second and offers no practical challenges. The quality of the light is warm. No harshness, no glare, no blue tinge. The original bulbs in the fixtures were BR30s. These BR40s are a little bit larger, and the bulb fills more of the receptacle and extends to a point that is essentially flush with the ceiling's sheetrock. I like the appearance that these larger bulbs make in the receptacles. It's a nice, modern, finished look, and you get less of a sense of a void in the ceiling. There's a 60-watt savings per bulb in savings; the quality of light is perfect; and the bulbs last forever. I plan to buy more over time.

One bad out of 20
I retrofitted our house with BR40 and BR30 bulbs to reduce heat and save energy. These lights are beautiful to look at, and the brightness and color is virtually indistinguishable from the ones they are replacing. They respond to the dimmer very predictably, except at very low power they might come on or are slow to come on. Just turn up the dimmer a hair and they come right on. Our only issue was one bulb that would occasionally turn off then back on by itself. It became annoying, so I replaced it. It was only 6 month old, which is why I took off one star. Overall we love these lights

Great, until they're not
These are very high quality bulbs in appearance, color is true to claim of 2700K with 800 lumens. Robust build, as they should be for the price when I bought them 6 years and 2 months ago. Problem is that the package claims that they will last 22 years @ 3hrs per day, but the warranty is for 6 years. Mine started dying (lights are intermittent, at 6 years and 1 month. Not happy, given the extraordinary cost of these bulbs.

Beats CFLs hands down
I gave this product five stars because I feel like it deserves it. I have vaulted ceiling in my house where I was using 8 100 watt equivalent CFL bulbs in 6" canlights approximately 16-17 feet above the floor. The light wasn't quite as bright as I wanted it to be. The cans are R30 but I ordered the R40 bulbs. These bulbs are considerably brighter than the CFLs. There is the very slight delay when turning them on but it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Technology is getting better when it comes to light output of LED bulbs. I've been slowing converting my house over to LED lamps for some time now. So I'm a home study semi-pro at shopping for them. ;-) Everything that I have read about Phillips lamp has been good. Still wish the price would get better. The light color of these bulbs is very good. All the bulbs were consistant - be careful when buying cheaper versions of LED when there are several in view as the light color temperature can vary. Note - The R40 bulbs will not fit if you are using the swivel 'eye' type of trim rings - you have to use the R30 bulbs for those. The bottom line - Yeah I spent over $200 on light bulbs but I wish I had done it sooner - it is worth it as long as they last as long as they are rated for. I don't really enjoy changing bulbs in canlights that high off of the floor and the brightness of these bulbs is stellar. As far as CFLs I'm growing tired of their rated life because I've has some the last a few years and some a few months. The CFLs start to turn yellow as they ago too. The LEDs that I first installed a couple of years ago have not yellowed a bit.

Very disappointing--flashes when dimmed
I had very high expectations for these bulbs--that I would not have to replace them ever, that they would have good light, that they would be efficient and that they would use less energy. However, they are terrible--there are too many bulbs in the rooms to keep them up all the way so I have to dim them, but when they are dimmed they randomly flash on and off in a very annoying way. I don't know whether to give up on them or just suffer after paying all that money.

Cartoonesque large size with insane packaging
This is a big light fitting and may well exceed both the height and width of many fittings. The light is instant on with a bright pool of warm white light. LEDs are really coming of age and Philips seems to be getting into their stride. The biggest difficulty I had with these lights is the insanely enthusiastic clamshell packaging that hung onto its luminous passenger with the zeal of the partisans. I tried using scissors, a knife and then back to scissors. It is without doubt the worst packaged item I have ever received. The plastic has 90 degree folds to defeat scissors and is brittle so brute force induces sharp shards of plastic to fly towards one's eyes. Great for the thermonuclear blast but do these guys have any concept of 'out of box experience'?
