Meet Me At The Edge Of The World

Great travelling music
I bought this CD pre-release as I have a couple other Over the Rhine CD,s and I love their music. This is my first review of a a music group ever but after listening to this CD I felt compelled to write one. I only took this one CD on a week long trip through Colorado. I listened to the CD over and over again without getting tired of it. It is excellent traveling music, each song stands on it own, no one song is a home run hit but there are lots of doubles and triples with plenty of singles mixed in that carry the music through the entire CD. The tempo of the CD is soft and soothing at times, haunting and soul full at others, and uplifting on other tunes just perfect for traveling. The lyrics are thoughtful and poetic the musical arrangements are unique on each song, no two songs are alike that keep the music from getting repetitive, Karen's voice has so many facets to it as if she has several unique voices. She can sing the blues with the best and then touch the deepest emotions on a lovely ballad. Several songs such at Meet me at the edge of the world and their cover of It makes no difference keep playing over and over in my head because they have touched some deep emotion. I don't think you will be disappointed in this OtR CD.

Multiple Spins
Having heard several of the songs live prior to the release of Meet Me at the Edge of the World I had high hopes for a great record. Interestingly, upon the first couple of listenings, I thought it good but not exceptional. As a long time fan [early '90's] I wanted this to be the record that the world would take note of this band [couple]. So initial dissappointment. Then I kept playing it. The dissappointment transitioned into pure enjoyment. The discs are now in heavy rotation.Listening is enhanced in the early morning or late afternoon hours when easing into the day [Sunday morning is perfect] or decompressing from the stress of the workday. No it is not Ohio which is my favorite OTR record. It is a sublime shift that emphasizes some remarkable melodies and singing. It is music that is comforting in a crazy world. Simple music, simple production that is well performed.I do hope they return to a fuller, varied approach on the next record but I rank this one within my top 4 OTR records: Good Dog, Bad Dog, Ohio and Drunkards Prayer

Excellent, but maybe slightly over produced.
The songs are brilliantly written with lyrics straight from the heart. At times I think that Linford's piano playing gets lost in the background. An indie-country vibe throughout, with a touch of old school soul best describes the overall feel of this effort. Maybe a little less production would have imparted some of the story telling in a less clinical envelope, but not every song can be recorded perfectly. Overall a very good, consistent, and beautiful piece of art, crafted by two beautiful and very accomplished songwriters. For now, I place this second only to Ohio. Tomorrow, upon repeated plays, it may even tie or surpass that fine work. Some reviews are saying that there wasn't enough material here to warrant a double CD. I strongly disagree and think that all of the songs here complement one another. I found no throwaways.

More Twang, Less Piano
Never let it be said that OTR is in a style rut. You never know what to expect from Linford and Karen. In this case, it's less jazzy and more country with a set of tracks that sound as if they could have entirely been conceived around a camp fire on a perfect Summer night. Very acoustic guitar heavy and seriously lacking piano. And that turned me off at first, but it's growing on me.This is probably the most consistent effort by the duo. WAY less diverse than most of their offerings, which is sort of amazing considering this is a double album (it didn't actually need to be, you can easily burn the whole thing to one disc for convenience sake).Open the windows, turn it on, and soak it in slowly. And leave the edges wild.

Again, a winner and more
Hold your breath. This one hits with force. Not only do these two wrap us in pleasurable music of a different kind (not your twang twang country music twang) but if lyrics are as important to you as it is to many of us they are superb. Each stands alone as a poem with meaning I and you can relate to. No frantic need to be braking a fantastic history. Deeper and always such lovely harmonies. I am thrilled to post again a 5 star review for this unusually talented twosome. Courageous enough to be who they are: a non conformist duet whose love for music shines. I hope for more and wish for them to endure the oh so fickle music world and its so called "critics". Yes, I will play this, on and on and am glad I opted for the actual CDs, rather than the MP3 download. Now, exhale.

Outstanding, wide-ranging chamber-pop
In the interest of full disclosure, I've been a fan of Over the Rhine for a long time, going back to their indie/college rock days. I've seen them live multiple times, so I'm disposed to like their work. That said, "Meet Me at the Edge of the World" is one of their best. Now that Karin Berquist and Linford Detweiler are the only permanent members of the group, they are free from the constraints of the standard pop-group formats. The music is based around Detweiler's distinctive barrel-house/gospel piano and Berquist's sublime voice stretches and twists words and syllables into impressionistic collages. If you are an adventurous sort, you should definitely check out "Meet Me at the Edge of the World." I do not think you will regret it.

Not their best effort
I've been an Over the Rhine fan for 20+ years, starting with seeing them in a small bar promoting their first album 'Til We Have Faces all the way up to Meet Me At The Edge Of The World.I've listened to the album twice now and there just isn't a tune that has stuck in my head or had me humming all the next day. It feels like they rushed this one. I'm sure I'll give it a few more listens to see if it grows on me, but it seems more work than fun.If you're new to Over the Rhine, I'd suggest going back an album or two and try The Long Surrender or Trumpet Child. Or go way back and grab Drunkard's Prayer or Ohio, the best out of all of them.I'll still a fan and will see them on tour again in a few weeks, but it'll be for my older favorites.

Another great album from a highly underrated band
The "feelings" one experiences when listening to anything by Over The Rhine are indescribable. Poetic lyrics, ethereal voice, great musicianship.

Beautiful
I got this album when it first came out and have grown to love it. Having recently had the experience of hearing a lot of these songs live from Linford and Karin has deepened my appreciation further. Over the Rhine's music catches something profound at the heart of our human condition - love, loss, fragility, beauty, sadness, joy of living, are all bound up in these songs. Beautifully sung (even when Linford takes a lead vocal) and sensitively played by a top-notch group of musicians including Jay Bellerose (Raising Sand) and Eric Heywood (Transatlantic Sessions). Give the songs a few listens to let them grow and seep into your soul.
